I found a site called Giveawayoftheday.com a few days ago. Basically, everyday it offers a free download of software that you would normally have to pay for. It doesn't offer things like Photoshop CS3. It offers that file converters and registry cleaners and File hidders and small time games that are sale for about £1.50. Its legal though I'm not entirely sure how. I think people offer their software on it so they recieve beneficial advertising for their products. I found it pretty useful in geting videos off youtube on to my mp3 player with some of the video converters.

It's based at a tax haven island so I wouldn't be surprised if they were using some kind of tax rule bending somewhere.

It's probably a great way to get your software tested, rated and commented. At a quick look it seemed like the developers had more software available so it's good marketing. Also people who don't visit every site might look at what have missed. I would guess that most people who download wouldn't have bought the software anyway. Now they get some users to hang around forums, give suggestions on improvements and to sell updates and other software to.

That site is crap, in my opinion. You are forced to install the software on the day of the deal, as it remotely checks the servers for a timestamp. Therefore you can only use it until you have to inevitably reinstall Windows down in the future.

So, the software is free but in a try-before-you-buy kinda way. It's cool if you plan on purchasing the software anyway.

Just set your system date to the date you downloaded it, you would have to record that though.

I think it contacts a web thing for activation.

@Zaibatsu is right, it remotely connects to its own server to get the date.
