I have a lot of respect for Molyneux and especially Bullfrog. Back in the day they would actually write articles for magazines to help people learn assembly, they'd take on people and train them up very quickly, even teaching school kids programming. Bullfrog were not just a developer, they were a huge part of 16-bit computing (esp the Atari ST).
But yeah, if he'd just shut up with the lofty ideas and exagerations then we'd be less expectant. It's like when I was a kid and if my parents were unsure of whether we could do something, they'd tell us no, so if it turns out that we can it's a bit of a surprise, which IMO is infinitely better than disappointment. We'd be less critical I think if they shut up and just surprised us with what they'd done.
As for the wife in Fable, well the way I see it they added a whole new dimension to RPG's with that, GUILT! - now instead of just getting on with the mission at hand, we have to feel guilty for not checking on the wife!. Most of the time my wife would end up an alcoholic, or headless, depending on how much she annoys me. The one bonus with having a wife is she would give you weapons and stuff as a gift, and most of the time it was pretty decent stuff. Hardly the depths that Molyneux had in mind I'm sure.
We're going down... in a spiral to the ground...
