Geek Culture / Moral reasons for blocking Heathrow expansion are scientifically flawed.

Stop a 155 ton 747 carrying 500 people flying, and you have at best, 125 1.5 ton saloons travelling to their destinations instead. That's 500 extra tonnes to haul at least. It is more likely to be 250-300 cars due to business passengers. When an aircraft is high in the atmosphere, the harmful gases it releases are less likely to cause asthma. Which cannot be said for cars, which throw it out on the ground. The protesters' tents and other equipment are made out of PVC and other oil-based materials. Boats are even less efficent than cars due to cabin size and the fact they are pushing water, not air, which is lighter, out of the way.
I think they should just go home and read some science textbooks. Discuss.

Since the other one was scaring you guys so much...

Yeh but a plane taking off might frighten baby squirrels.

Just go home and think of the squirrels!

They should build a new airport somewhere else, anywhere else.

It would then give a bit of prosperity and jobs to another area, and doesn't increase the noise to residents already suffering.

Trust me, I'm living through Manchester Airports expansion and even though I live 20 miles from it and thought i wouldn't be effected, I've noticed a big increase in noise and they placed a flight path right over the house at 500feet! WTF I'm 20 miles from it can't you fly a bit higher? My theory is that more planes packed into the same airport mean lower and wider the area they will fly.

If I had know, I'd have protested against it's expansion too!

In all seriousness, I think there are many more people willing to buy a cheap flight than people willing to protest for what they believe in.

Why not a train? it seems more reasonable to compair it to that! My car weighs less than a tonne and a car ain't flying! I'm sure it would take more fuel to break the bonds with gravity than roll along on wheels.

No it just throws out the gases in the best place to cause the global warming effect

Boats can be blown by the wind using no carbon! Closest thing is blimb travel if you don't mind getting there slowly.

Chipmunks are not the same as squirrels! Squirrels are like 5 times bigger.

Personally, I think if you stopped 747's flying to popular holiday spots like Majorca, Ibiza, or wherever, people wouldn't drive there instead - they would find a holiday destination somewhere a lot closer ....... like Hull, maybe. The point is, if you make it easier to travel, people will travel more.

Not really resonable to compare it with either. People only travel such distances to go on holiday because of air travel. If the alternative isn't as convenient they won't go so far. A week in the sun isn't so tempting if you spend most of it driving there and back.

By way of demonstration, he emitted a batlike squeak that was indeed bothersome.

I was talking in a USA to UK conversion sense. We don't have Chipmunks. We have red squirells (UK) and your damn grey squirells (USA) oversexed, oversized, and over here!

I went UK to Switzerland by train in less than a day. Didn't top gear drive it in a day too and beat the two who went bus-plane-bus?
