Nice, for a first attempt. Use references. E.g. Front back and side. Pictures of guns.

No offence, but why ask for crit when it's so obvious already? That gun is obviously not anywhere near a real weapon. I know it's a first attempt. I'm not knocking that, but if you are asking for crit on this, you may not have the eye for modeling. Anyhow, my advice is to you to keep practicing, keep challenging yourself. Look at other people's model wireframes, learn how to duplicate them, figure out the techniques involved and apply it to your own future models.

To give crit on that, I wouldn't even know where to start. All I can say is get some pictures of a glock and try to build a model from it.

It's very boxy and I would learn your tools a wee bit more - you probably could take this into Wings 3D (It has a more convenient modeller IMO and correct me if I am wrong but MS3D can only handle triangles). You're lucky, somebody recently showed me a boxy gun and well I made a quick tutorial onto improving it...though my techniques were NOT the right way of doing things, but they give you the knowledge to work towards better modelling skills (I hope).

Though you probably won't immediately get the results I got, but you can certainly work towards it and of course the tools I used are basic ones which I am sure Wings3D and MS3D have. (As for the comments on the images, they were directed at the person I made it for)
[Made in Silo 2]

From there you should be able to finish it off. Just keep trying to follow this routine until you get the hang of it - even if you fail, each failure means you're learning something, because you're grasping how your program works, how you do 3D and how to use the tools. Once you've got the hang of it you'll be able to make your final gun and then move onto the 'proper' way and no doubt will produce good results there.

PS: This would have done better in 3D Chat.

I've uploaded a side view of a model of a dragunov sniper i made a while back now.
I've put the reference image i used on the top. I've also rendered the wire frame over the top so you can see how it was built and use it for a reference if you like. Its about 1200 polygons. You just have to get reference images and pay close attention to what is going on in the picture, and some times make it up really.

Probably about 5-8 hours. It does take a long time to get the mesh right. The back still needs work though. But i did this model about a year ago i think.

@Seppuku: You gave me that tutorial and raven said to you that most guns are boxy. And Rounding the edges make it loose the guns quality.

Indeed, but not boxy in the sense that there's no smooth edges...take a look at the top part of mine and the top of Big Add's, you'll notice the edges aren't at a 90 degree angle, they're more round and guns tend to follow that trend - the handle has some roundness to it and so do most parts of the gun...technically yes that's still boxy, but when you take your and Lee Stevens' work you'll see that they're too boxy. As for loss of quality...if Raven said that, then he's off his nut, when it look like it is an extruded outline of a cardboard cut-out without demonstration of other details - like the roundness of the top of a barrel, then 'rounding' it can't lose it's quality as by doing so it's more accurate to what the gun is actually like.

Thats because dragnov has a rounded edge. Last time I check most pistol are boxy. Its the handle which has to be rounded so the person can get his hand round it.

Go for 2...As for what we're talking about, it's the 'smoothness' on guns and how it's relevant to 3D modelling.

Seriously, your first attempt there is the equivalent of a stick figure, you should have asked "How can I make a decent model?", rather than asking for crit. Now don't get me wrong, we all start somewhere, I remember when I couldn't model anything much better

The texture makes a model look more high poly. You should use the texture to make lines and some of the minor bevels on a gun. However, you shouldn't even worry about texture for now, I would just model a highpoly gun to start with, when you can do a gun in your sleep then you should start texturing

If elements have the filter called "patchwork", then that would be a good option to make the handlegrip with, but why don't you try experimenting some yourself. Sometimes, that's the best way to learn.

Also check out styles - you might be able to do something there - you can use the texture style - so you probably could use the patch work - save it - then make a new image - do some layers with things like I dunno the cloud effect, then use the texture style with your patch work image and see what you get.
