Well, I really thought that MMORPG were over-rated, and I just couldn't get why they are so popular. Mind you, I had only played Lineage II on a sub-par laptop with most effects turned down, and a 11mb (max) wireless connection. I also played a small amount of Guild Wars, and tried Everquest on a friends comp. To be honest I wasn't all that thrilled.

Well now I have a new Widescreen laptop, with 4GB Ram and an nvidia geforrce 8600, and a 54mb strong wireless connection. I purchased WCIII Battle Chest, as I like Star Craft, AOEII, C&C and the like. With it came a 14 day trial of WOW, and I can honestly say I am hooked. Perhaps my enthusiam will die down. But I found WOW pretty easy to get into and rather enjoyable.

Looking to get the expansion and have the new expansion due out next year on reserve. So if anyone plays WOW, drop me an email.

=)

Who would have thunk?????

Wireless connections are always scary for MMORPGing in my opinion.

You are fighting a big red dragon, someone switches the microwave on, no omg no, run! RUN! [TOAST]

Guess why so many started playing? WOW is an MMORPG for the masses. It's also constructed in a way that makes it addictive and it may consume all your spare time and it may start affecting your studies etc.

I started playing when I had a lot of time off but when I couldn't keep up with my guild mates it got boring and I stopped. I played beta for 1 month and then 2 month after that.

Zombie:
Karl Marx stated that religion was the opium of the people making them too soft and not willing to overthrow the leaders of the world. Communism is based on Marxism. You should pick that up in history class.

Let's not make this a political thread now.

Well, if WoW is so great, I might try this 14 day trial, I've been looking for a good MMORPG...my only fear is looking like the South Park crew after playing it

DA-Yea bud I remember that from my ninth grade class..but I wasn't saying anything about that, I was just asking what the drink was haha but thanks for the free history reminder. No worries mods, i'm not going political..I'm in yahoo answers for that, anyway I became rather heavily interested by marxism and other forms of governement..communism to me back then and a little bit now looked like a truly wonderful way to live. Everyone helps out each other in a small village, everything is shared and everyone is equal.

I remember my government teacher had a poster up with a farm representing different forms of government..hahaha the one to always make me giggle was facism. "The government comes to your farm and takes your cow and milk and shoots you."

Well there we go haha..I've rambled again thanks DA haha.

I played WoW for months... never felt like I HAD to play it. I don't know why people think it's so addicting. It's just a fun game. I stopped playing because I don't have enough time for it anymore with work and other projects. If you can take a game to an un-healthy level, that's sad, and you're troubled. All in all, WoW is a fun game, with lots of fun things to do. Even though I miss playing it, I can easily go forever with never touching it again... afterall. It's just a game.

yeah, that depends who you are...

my dad works at a university and has done some advising/counseling with students... he's run across a couple who are smart and could do well in school but are "Addicted" to online games... literally destroying their chance at passing college... and they know it >_<

i think there are some people who have such little self control that they get addicted to games such as wow and can't stop. of course there are other people with a grip on reality that can stop whenever they feel like it... because they know it's just a game and won't accomplish anything for their life. (and on top of that can be harmful because of the potential things they would have been able to do with that time).

One man, one lawnmower, plenty of angry groundhogs.

Zen, just make sure you don't get addicted. That's how WoW is designed, but it's also a game you can play in manageable small chunks and still enjoy.

Sure, you might not become that Level 70 Endgame God-Thing backhanding your average Leeroy Jenkins overnight, but you can still enjoy it in small chunks.

On that note, I've been playing WoW myself for the past month. I'm Kenwryll on Zangarmarsh server. To this day I have yet to pass level ten, playing only weekends when my work/college schedule can allow it, and only about an hour a time each time.

Everyone knows you can't make toast in a microwave

I haven't played WoW but it's addicting for the same reasons as most RPGs, the whole guilds and improving your character are addicting because it's like you are creating your own character, and people like feeling that they own something.
I've seen the Leroy Jenkins video (hilarious ) ahhh watching all the nerds panicking and breathing heavily and saying things like "Stick to the plan chums!" lol
I don't play games like that because there is so much to learn, about all the powers and guilds and stuff, puts me off. When will someone make an MMORPG about the real world?

I played LOTRO since the BETA and then decided to do the 6 month for £36 deal they were offering. Then yesterday I changed my card details on paypal and accidently cancelled my subscription . The game got way too boring anyway, I'll never bother with an MMORPG again, it wasn't for me.

I honestly never got the attraction of it, and why so many are now addicted to it. While yeah it's a fun and fairly easy mmorpg, problem is that's about all it is.

I mean there's nothing really unique that stands out about it except that it is set in the Warcraft universe. There was so much that it could've been in development, and after playing the final product it really never changed that much.. which in all was a great shame. It's like Star Wars Galaxies, or Earth & Beyond. Where they start out as great ideas and on initial release (or first play) yeah they're great, but eventually somewhere down the line someone on the dev team does something monumentally stupid that just makes it pointless.

More than anything else that realistically puts me off wanting to play it on a regular basis is more the community that WoW has than anything else. It's fully of mostly crazed people, most of whom will never leave you the hell alone in-game.

Once had some guy follow me for about 2hours sending me constant "party requests", you'd think he'd have got the hint after the first 10 declines; but no, he just kept doing it. Eventually I lost my rag and told him to do something quite innopropriot with a pinapple, a gopher and his mom.
I got a nice black mark for that and temporary ban for being "abusive"... which to a degree sure I was, but honestly if the ****wit had got the hint the first few times and wasn't so damn dense and void of life that he could follow me about then a know it would never have come to being the way I was.

This is something that really lets down many mmorpg games that while most will have their niggles it's the no-life gamers that need desperately to be loved by some random person across the world who doesn't really give a flying rats ass what new medical condition or whatever is wrong with them apart from needing some serious therapy wouldn't atleast help to tone down and get them to turn off the computer once in a while as to meet REAL people ... them I firmly believe that more gamers would be inclined to atleast try out some decent mmos or not be driven away by the retarded communities that follow them.

The only mmorpg I've played, and still play after 5years on a regular basis.. is Final Fantasy XI. You know why? Because the social structure in the game is a lot like living in a major metropolis like London or Los Angelos.

Simply put, you need actual understanding of how to socialise with people to get a response. Most of the time people will leave you to your own devices on a day-to-day basis. There are really idiots shouting out "how i mine 4 f15|-|!" .. and talking to those who do not speak my native language is also a damn sight easier with the keyword translation system that contains over 2,500 words, and places which are specific enough to construct relatively understandable sentances with.

What's more is the game is constantly being rebalanced monthly. There's no ridiculous thing of the basic armour costing more than a newbie can possibly afford. There also isn't a case of the game curve suddenly dropping when you reach a certain level or have certain spells, or the monsters alternatively just getting so ridiculously difficult you can't go where-ever the hell you like.

Yeah the game is online only, and an mmo.. but honestly to play it feels a lot like a single player game with more intelligent npcs that will respond to you. It isn't without it's flaws, but seriously it is about the best damn mmo out there; which incredibly while it might not have the 9million users that WoW has.. still has a community of 5million, and aspects for every gamer with fairly large additions to content every-year. Not just a couple new quest or such... but an entire sodding additional storyline with craploads of quests, jobs, etc. added to increase the playability again all of which being very well balanced.

You have the longevity in there, without the worry that it eventually all comes down to constant farming to achieve anything.
When there is finally another mmo that doesn't just promise, but delivers something similar (like Tabula Rasa looks like it will) then I'll find something else to play long-term... until then though I firmly see games like WoW as some sort of gaming crack that we all know is bad and luckily some of us have a built-in immunity to.

Rainbows? I hate those friggin' things. You'll just be sitting there, minding your own business, and they'll come marching in, and crawl up your leg, and start biting the inside of your *censored*, and you'll be all like, "Hey. Get out of my *cencored* you stupid rainbows."

What do you expect? He lives in Hertfordshire...there's not much to do there at all, except to hate everything...including the world (of warcraft) As for Kittens and Rainbows...well he has the Cat loving and Leprechaun loving community on the forums to face for that.

I'd like to think of it as being highly opinionated, rather than boredom. heh
And I'd argue with what you said, but tbh you're right really; being able to rant is like an artform of it's own here. Feels good to be living back around Herts, as it's weird at times living around people who don't argue or think an argument means you hate someone or something.

I quite like Kittens and Rainbows mind ^_^
Just lots about computer games that become some sorta religion kinda piss' me off.

Very true though, but I've had nothing to really rant on here about, but yaho answers gives me all the fuel I need.
