Hi all.

For some time ago I changed the fileformat of an .txt file to an .exe file, to show a friend what happend. Now I can't delete it, because windows sais that it's used by another program or user. There is only ONE user on my computer, and that's me. And no program should use it. I've restared my computer, but I couldn't delete it then either. So, can anyone explain why I can't delete it, and how I should do to delete it?

Take care,
Mr X.

Try with shift+del instead of del, it works somtimes. If it doesn't, try to reboot in safe mode.

if it's a old computer (which are stupid). You can put the file in a folder and delete the folder. I don't think this works on computers above 98.

If everything was back to normal, it would happen again.

Nothing works. Not even that unlocker thing. But now I what program thats useing the file. It's explorer. So it's very hard to make it work, because the minute expolrer is on, it starts to use the file for some wiered reason.

P.S. It's an quite new computer, with windows xp home edition. About an year old.

EDIT:

I DID IT!!! I shut down explorer with ctrl + alt + delete and then I deleted the file with the command promt. And it worked.

Delete it from command prompt, works every time for me. You could write a batch file to delete it as well, they can do tricky things. Batch files are also useful in hacking into the school computers.

Open up the command prompt...

Hit Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up the task manager...

End the explorer process...

Locate the file using the command prompt and delete it...

Click File -> New Task(Run...) in the task manager...

Type explorer.exe and hit enter...

This has worked for me in the past on stubborn files...

That was what I did, Thraxas. And it worked. The file is deleted.

Just kurius, what is an batch file? And how do you use it?

Quote: "the oparating system complains that it is not an exe, but you can still open it normaly with the text editor."

Lol. My computer actually thinks it's an real exe. When I changed the name from .txt to .exe it became an wiered console program that does't respond. You just se the marker thing jump around in the text window.

I'm not sure of the actual definition, but basically they're script programs written using the same commands that command prompt uses. The file extension is bat.

I use this batch file to empty temp folders quickly:

They're blocked on school computers. Can't get onto the command prompt, either, using a modified shortcut on the quick launch, because it comes up with an error message reading "Blocked by administrator". Then again, it does that if you try to do anything, including search a folder.

My school's computers have a very big security hole; it will open any file on a student drive or external device no matter what extension it is. Quite stupid if you ask me, you can execute a batch file like this and you're in:

Also this one kid told me that if you open notepad and type some junk in, don't save it, then log out, you're in an administrator account. He's been reading the teacher's emails. You can also bring firefox on a flashdrive and mechanism that blocks some sites won't bother you.

start->run->cmd it will delete almost anything (unless it's NTFS protected)

I know a certain school where if you pull the network cable out of the back wait about 10 seconds then put it back in you get full access to everything

The school didn't give me a job, but they gave it to someone with no qualifitications who previously setup their secure network with Dynamic IP, idiots, anyone can walk in with a laptop and surf around their network too!

I found a fairly simple work around to that at our school; I coded my own. Simply make a cpp app with cin>> and input the buffered data into the system() command and it'll act exactly the same as cmd, it's quite cool.

You need administrator rights to rename extensions. Enter folder options and untick "Hide known extensions".

To untick "Hide known extensions" you must be in the control panel, and click the mapp alternative thing.

Quote: "Click rename that only renames teh file not the extension. Or do i need to enable some sort of option?"

Actually it will work, if you've done what NeX the Fairly Fast Ferret wrote. At last on my computer, which have windows xp. So if you have xindows xp, this method will work

We all know it's aimed at any god, the reader's god.. I guess. I really don't care though... for personal reasons. According to the AUP though, it should go.

For goodness' sake, it's an opinion. If it was "The one thing worse than the brutality of the engine, is the ignorance of the brakes.", there wouldn't be a problem. Stop being pathetic. Have you seen the "British Police - Go To Hell" signs being held up by Muslims on the front of some newspaper a while back? Are they told to put their signs down? No! Therefore, why should you put your signature down?

Lol at my school they left msconfig open so I could unlock the entire computer if I had five mins. They also got rid of the My Computer icon and yet you could right-click on the start menu and add the C drive to the menu and get into anything on it haha. We had a lot of fun with that. They even left the security cameras unsecured on their own servers, so we looped the cameras to see how long it took em, they got it when the Tech guy was watching himself eating lunch when he was in his room!

Ohhhh, sorry. Did I write "The one thing worse then the brutality of the evil, is the ignorance of the god."? Because then I forgot an o. It was meant to be "The one thing worse then the brutality of the evil, is the ignorance of the good.", so I thank you for correcting my mistake.

And it was something Martin Luther King said once that I liked. I don't know if he used exactly those words, though, but I liked what it stated.

The one thing worse then the brutality of the evil, is the ignorance of the good.
