I'm trying to improve my currently poor modelling skills and since I did a complete re-install of my system I've only just got round to re-installing Truespace again.

As I'm only practicing, what I do isn't really any use and gets thrown away. However, if there's anything you need it would be useful to have something specific to work on.

If it gets finished you can have it. If you don't think what I've done is good enough or simply don't use it then no problem.

So, does anyone have anything non-urgent that you could use?

The only rule is that it has to be a static object - no humans or living creatures - I simply can't do them yet!

Any requests would be welcome and I'll give anything my best shot!

TDK doing 3D modelling! Crap, I'm gonna have to start

I really need a triangle for one of my games.

Being serious: ummm... try making a boat they're always cool, or for more points make a car interior (dashboard, wheel, handbrake and gear stick) that'd be cool, or am I asking too much there?

[edit]
I just thought how strange that would seem to a non-programmer: "What! You think making a dashboard is harder than making a whole boat!?"

a car? it's a good idea for a practice model and i could probably get some use of it in my game, if you cant make the texture or uv map it i can do that

(information about the game)

Basicly, it's just a first person sims game , i thought it would be hard to code somthing like this, but actually it's falling into place really nicelly.

i want the game to be even more free roaming than sims is, so i'm going to make a neighbourhood, downtown and lost of cool stuff, and if you'll be able to make a low poly car, i'd sure use it

This might be a lot of work, or maybe not once you had the form down, but how about a series of tunnel or cooridor sections that can be interconnected. Have straight sections, intersections ,and corner or curved sections. For some extra work when you are really bored, make hatches and/or doors that are compatible with the cooridor sections.

Enjoy your day.

I'm not too bad at buildings either. Here's my Empire State Building:

But about the triangle Obese - you want a .X or a .3DS file?

A boat or car is OK, but what I'm really after is specifics. Preferably something that you have a use for in a current project.

So, a row-boat, a steamboat, a canoe, a yacht, an ocean liner, a ferry, a galleon?...

Please don't ask for something you don't actually need yourself though. I can think of random objects myself.

Here's the easiest one - the sweetcorn:

The car is OK, but for some reason, it screws up when saved as a .X file and loaded into DBC. Working on it...

I'm happy to see that i'm not the only one who can't model. I downloaded Blender 3d (because it was free) and I made an assault rifle using only a low quality picture off the internet. Still, it isn't very good, I didn't even texture it.

@ TDK
I would like having some more (higher quality) weapons if you get a chance.

(165 polys).

It's not a proper texture - I just made it from a photo on the net.

If anyone is any good at graphics, then feel free to clean up the image in the zip file and repost it.

I might have to use that boat too, it looks very nice, TDK.

I've got a couple requests if you don't mind.

1) A weeping willow tree.

2) A log big enough to be a fallen tree. With a little bend in it, not perfectly straight.

I can't animate either - that's why I only do static objects. I'n using Truespace which can animate, but I believe it's the wrong type of animation!

I've been looking for a good tutorial on how it's done with (if possible) a free program. I could then create my .X models in TS, then load them into the other program and animate them.

Quote: "Um... Shouldn't this be in 3D chat?"

Probably, but I'm doing them really low poly primarily for DBC users, so I thought it better here.

Quote: "A log big enough to be a fallen tree. With a little bend in it, not perfectly straight."

Are you talking about one for characters to walk across something like a ravine, or just as a bit of scenery which isn't actually used other than to block the way?

Quote: "could you make some WoW type buildings"

Can you point me to a web site with screenshots showing the type of building you are talking about. Sorry I've never seen/played it.

A Willow tree isn't the best tree for a model if you want a low poly count.

Have you tried making one with plains. Quite reasonable results can be had with 2, 3 or 4 plains (4, 6 and 8 polys respectively):

The code in the attached zip includes a 'NumPlains' variable which you can experiment with to get the best effect.

Crazy Programmer:

You mean a house in this style:

It's unfinished and currently 220 polys. I don't like the roof texture at all, but it's the closest I have to fantasy style roofing tiles.

Anyone got anything better?

Not bad stuff, though I would have posted this in 3D chat (I only came across it by accident)

With the roof there, I'd try a thatched texture - something like this I made earlier (I've been doing a bit of house modelling too)

Though possibly with a more cartoon style to it - if you want use the one I got there or edit it to how you like - plus it's seamless (Well should be, didn't appear to have any on my model).

With modelling it seems you're doing well with low poly stuff. I'd probably try some organic stuff - they tend to be more complex and you'd pick up more ways from doing things I hope - plus you'd have to deal with the use of edgeloops which may come in handy for your models (even if you're going low poly)

Recently I was requested to write a organic modelling tutorial for absolute beginners using two of the most basic tools out there - the result isn't too bad and I'd hope you benefit from it - also look out for any new one (I'm currently updating all of my old 3D tutorials and making new ones)

Oh and yes it's a Pokemon, it was under the emailer's request. But I gave a little mention on doing humanoid muscles.

As I said a little earlier, I just wanted a few ideas for models to practice on that might get used if I actually finished them (and they were any good of course). Most practice stuff get thrown away which is a waste if what you've done isn't too bad.

As I'm aiming at models for DBC (as low poly as possible) and I'm not all that good at it, I thought here would be better. All the experts hang in 3D chat and I'm sure that most of my models would get the mickey taken out of them!

I'm also unlikely to be inundated with model requests here as so few people visit this board!

And thanks for the straw texture - it still doesn't look how I envisaged it, but it's a lot better than the yellow tiles I was using before.

I see (sorry, I tend not to read much on threads full of showcased work) As for practice stuff, that is true, most of the stuff I throw away is practice stuff, especially with my latest work, I've ditched 3/4 models to get where I am with it. But such is the world of media, and well as long as what you make is a benefit to other people then I can see why you put it here (as modellers tend to hang out in 3D Chat and people who'll use them hang around here )

Quote: "As I'm aiming at models for DBC (as low poly as possible) and I'm not all that good at it, I thought here would be better. All the experts hang in 3D chat and I'm sure that most of my models would get the mickey taken out of them!"

I see, the tutorial I put up there in my last post if at all any use to you is quite low poly. As for experts, nah we're pretty mellow in the side of the forum, beside there's a lot of new guys that come in with questions/models. But I think there's probably 2/3 people that count qualify as 'pros' in Apollo, we're just intermediates and beginners.

Quote: "And thanks for the straw texture - it still doesn't look how I envisaged it, but it's a lot better than the yellow tiles I was using before."

Hehe, no problem, I just found a photo of some straw cut a square out it out and made it tile-able in photoshop. What sort of thing are you going for on the roof anyway?

As for model requests...that's the consequence of such a thread. I'm sure soon enough you'll know not to do it again

Well good luck with your models matey. And if there's any 3D crit you need or any type of advice, I'll do my best to give answers and/or help.

I was asked if I could do a WoW style building and after a search on the net found a few screenshots - including the one my model is based on:

As you mentioned it does have a cartoonish feel to it, but I really like the look of the roof...

I see, it looks like you need your roof texture to look 'softer' and perhaps blend more, and to have a variation in shade/colour on different tiles (well more defined than in your example), though I'm no decent texture artist.

Also, do you have photoshop? You might be able recreate those tiles with photoshop styles effects...actually I'll give it a shot and if I succeed I'll show you what I did. Though in terms of texturing skills we're probably on the same boat.

[edit]
This is what I got, it's probably not exactly the thing you're going for, but with some customisation on the method I went for (if any different from what you've already done) If you don't use photoshop, I'm sure you can find some way to achieve the same sort of effects (Or just use my result and tile them, recolour and do what you need)

I used a layer per tile to be able to use the 'style' effect how I wanted.

And what I did:
Made a white rectangle and went onto the style settings.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/seppuku05/Textures/howto1.jpg
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/seppuku05/Textures/howto2.jpg
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/seppuku05/Textures/howto3.jpg
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/seppuku05/Textures/howto4.jpg

It's almost the same sort of thing you got, but you probably should darken the Bevel highlights and shadows, or soften them and do what you need to follow the WoW style. With the colour overlay, I varied this per layer, the darker/lighter effects are created by the opacity level and the purple bit was by changing the colour.

Hope I didn't patronise you in anyway and hope it is of use to your texturing.
