Hi all.

I'm studeing at the universety now, and we got this assignment where we should write a report about an computer revolution (don't know if revolution is the right word, but you get the idea), like the internet, the mouse or modern operating systems. But I don't really know what to write about. Do anyone have any idea?

Take care,
Mr X.

how DBP is currently taking over the world

idk... the internet sounds good, but unoriginal. how about the graphics revolution? or gaming in general? or you could go really far back and talk about the silicon chip revolution...

I bet you ten other people will write about the internet, so choose something unique. Maybe the advancement of computer specs in general, like how back in the day, having kilobytes of ram was standard, and now we're almost talking about terrabytes.

Data storage in general would be a good one

Maybe look into Portable Internet devices or Open source software. OSS would definately be my choice.

RAM. Begin with the cathode ray tube memory of early machines, then move on to modern RAM.

Talk about the generation gap it created, the difference between people who've know the internet for the majority of their lives (people less than about 30) and the rest, is phenomenal. In terms of how people think about being social, solving problems, their place in the world etc.

Probably the biggest gap in the developed world since remembering/not remembering WWII.

I don't want to do something with the internet, since it wouldn't be very original. An idea I had was to make an report about the pre-internet networks that would later evolve inte the internet.

The silicon chips sounds very interesting. So does the graphics thing and the RAM thing. Will check into it.

I second Open Source Software, I think that would probably make an interesting bit of research - you probably could dive into the whole 'make it free and completely available to anyone who wants to use it' philosophy and how that has impacted software and computers...heck there's such thing as 'Open Source Music'.

I think you should do a more general report covering how the physical components of computers have changed and what effect this has had on their power and the increasing access of computers to a wider audience.
You must have heard of the generations of computers (can't remember how many, 6?) use the generations as a guideline.

Or you could be clever and talk about revolutions that are happening right now , Artificial intelligence in the future, etc.
Are you allowed to speculate or is this a history thing?

Perhaps you could write a report on the societal implications of a generation who have easy access to effective spelling and grammar checking software but can't be bothered to use it. You could point out that they actually seem to have an aversion to using it because appearing uneducated, inarticulate, unintelligent and at times incoherent ingratiates them to their peers.

Don’t forget to mention that even people who clearly lack the communication and writing skills of a twelve-year-old who are trying to pass themselves off as university students won't use it.

Have a nice day.

@NTFFF
(You have the longest initials ever!! )
Ingratiates is the right word there.

@JD
But getting things wrong is cool right?
Computers are making people stupid. If one person writes a spell checker, no-one ever has to be able to spell again!

Spell-checkers can be really good, if you use the correctly. Then they will not be more then those books, in which you look up words, are. But if you rely on them to do all the spelling for you, instead of correcting you when you're spelling something bad, then you'll probobly become a bad speller.

Spell-checkers are tools, not brains.

JD
If you mean I'm spelling bad, I won't argue with you. English is not my native language. But in my native language, I'm not that bad .

Or porhaps I missunderstood you, and you just meant that people that rely too much on spell-checkers become stupid when it comes to spelling. Anyway, I get your point.

Well, you're doing better at English than I can do at any other language. What bothers me most is native English speakers who can't be bothered to make a coherent sentence.

That's exactly what I was trying to show. My last post would pass a spell-check perfectly.

does it have to be about something that already happened?

Coz I read about a proposed future method of data storage using man made diamonds using 2 different isotopes of carbon as 1's and 0's recently (note: i don't know if its possible, or if i've got my facts entirely straight), that could be interesting.

I don't have a sig, live with it.

Well, the report should be about an breakthrough that has happend. So that diamond memory thing is out of the question (even if it would be interesting to make a report about if it's possible to do that or not).

Anyway, I've decided to make a report about integrated circuit's. It should not be very hard to find information about, but at the same time it would be about something that have had an huge impact on computers.

Thanks . But you know, when I was small, an blind turtle would spell better then me.
