hey all
i got a old server off my dad that he had at his work.

SPECS:
CPU - 550MHz P3
RAM - 256mb
HDD - 20gig Main, 20 gig RAID 0 SCSI

more info here http://www.ciao.co.uk/HP_NetServer_E60__5357855 (note: this is the 500MHz version, i have the 550)

what should i do with it? It has a fresh windows 2003 Enterprise on it.

Thanks

Sweetness, use it as a web dev server

You could also put linux on it, would run quite well.

Yeah Apache, MySQL, Perl/PHP/ASP test machine. I'd probably replace 2003 with linux for more fun. You could make a nice custom firewall with IP chains.

SCSI is pretty fast, it could be your MP3 media streamer for your xBox 360.

It says it's dual processor. Maybe you could find another processor for it off ebay. Better still find a couple of 1.2Ghz P3s off ebay and make it a decent 2.4Ghz-ish workhorse

by the way a P3 is faster than a P4 for the same Mhz.

yer, it can have 2 CPU's, but i dont think you can put more than a 600MHz cpu in (i might be wrong). Only prob is that i cant find a chip for it

i was thinking of a web server, but then i thought that my internet wont be fast enough
8000/384....i also run a css server on another pc next 2 it.

ok i just remember that my old P3 pc that i was gonna put linux on has a slot 1 core

This is the servers CPU http://www.cpu-world.com/sspec/SL/SL3F7.html

And this is the other 1
http://www.cpu-world.com/sspec/SL/SL37C.html

theres hardly any difference, but it doesnt boot up when the other CPU is in.
Does anyone know y?

Could be something in the BIOS or more likely with the age of the machine a jumper needs setting on the motherboard.

You could also try switching around the position of the chips. I might prefer the slower one in a certain slot, like twin speed memory works.

Dunno maybe there is a jumper on the motherboard to set the clock frequency and bus speed. If you set it to a multiple = to 450Mhz (im guessing 4.5 x 100) it should run and the seconds chip should run at 450 also even though its 550.

Mind you I read in the 109 page manual that both CPUs have to run at the same speed and be the same model number so maybe it's not possible, but as the 450 wont run solo i guess it an incorrect BIOS setting or MB jumper.

I just read it's technical specs...

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/lpn11182/lpn11182.pdf?jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN

it says two Pentium 2 - 450s or two Pentium 3 - 550s

ok this is my idea.
Im using this server as a file server for now until i know what 2 do with it.
Then i got a old desktop pc (P3 450MHz, 384mb ram, 20gig HDD) and installed fedora on it. I am gonna use it as a webserver.
