Quick question, please excuse my ignorance.

Is there a performance difference between using a model with one large 2048x2048 texture map assigned using
texture object x,x

and an object with it's textures preassigned in a modelling program using say 4 512x512 textures?

To my knowledge, different video cards handle multitexturing better and worse. For modern PC's, having 4 512x512 textures should be faster. Plus over an entire game you may find you can share more textures, saving on replicated images in video memory.
