Hey guys,

I am going to be starting a thread soon to kick off the horror competition I am going to be running with a free copy of my horror music pack as one of the prizes.

Before I do I would like to know if anybody else has any prizes they wish to sponsor the competition with to make it more of a community vibe...all ideas welcome.

Also I think it would be better if you guys discussed the format rules, what kinds of game can enter...overall theme, if you want a track from the pack to use in your entry blah blah.

I want to hear all your thoughts and ideas before we begin!

Oh of course..I'm a big fan of horror, to this day haven't had a movie or game scare me. You could split it into categories, such as

Shadow Use
Scary Sounds
More Story Based *disturbing tales*

Nothing wrong with a good 'ol creature kick either, what if you had people pick from those choices and make a small game or script some events based on their choices?

ok how about we set up a scenario that everybody has to follow. Ie each games main character must have amnesia, there should be a lost love in a destroyed city, full of zombies...you know some really clishe' stuff then see how everyone puts their spin on it, that could be fun.

I need some input guys.

The idea has flavor to it, I like the idea of setting up a template for everyone to follow. You could revive the old horror stories like frankenstein or drac or the swamp thing, a wolf or some other old baddie raised to bring terror. Although dark narrow hallways and creepy music will always scare the crap out of me, but noone has done it yet...and then have nothing there and keep that going for at least 10 min of exposition and then scare them.

One thing that I would worry about is the art..but thats where shadows and sound come into play..why should you have to see whats after you? Walk down a hall and see a blackened figure sweep down the small lit portion next to you..creepy? Yes, also what about making something ooze down the walls or have a swarm of zombies in a city as you were saying, there is great potential to scare people. I hope other people start talking soon.

Then you haven't played the fullyramblomatic series of horror games:

First game in the series:
http://www.fullyramblomatic.com/5days/

I might participate in something like this. My suggestion, don't allow voting, cuz that's lame, use judges

Also, I probably wouldn't participate if the story idea was limited or I didn't like it If you leave it open, I'm more likely to join up.

If you need prizes I could offer free email forwarding ie. yourname@crydrk.com but I'm not quite sure how many people would find that a prize...

Ok how about having it so that you will be judged on certain things, Like dynamics ie how well you balance action with silence and suspense. Ill judge the entries myself, anyone who else donates prizes can also judge.

@The Crazy: Thanks for the offer but im looking for horror related prizes.

Oooh I might enter this, as long as the standard isn't too high.
Does it have to be a "I'll just edge slowly around this corner... and... BOO! Aarrrgh! DIE ALIEN SCUM!" type game, because I've been wanting to make a really freaky, mess with your head type game ever since watching Donnie Darko.

[edit]
Wow, I sounded quite insane in that post

Yeah i think the theme of psychological horror....ie who can make the player scared without there being loads of enemies in your face...so kinda like Silent Hill what you cant see is scarier. So its all about the dynamics of the level and the atmosphere.

Does this sound like a good format for everybody.

This sounds fun. I like the ideas you present... like the common theme that everyone has to follow and see what kind of twists and gameplay ppl come up with.

3 months sounds good.

Maybe you can do something like give us two of your songs to see who most uniquely implements it. Like a slow scary one and a fast upper beat exciting one.

As for the type, are you going to constrain it to like first-person, 3rd person, top down, ect or leave it open?

I think it would be best to leave it open, to see what variations people come up with, using the 'rules' I think releasing a few tracks from the pack could work, i might even make some new ones for this project itself.

Anyone else got some ideas?

My suggestion #1
Instead of the typical judging categories:
Graphics
Gameplay
Sounds
Blah blah

Make it look similar to this:
Composition (How effective the objects, effects, and lights are used, even if no details are applied)
Creativity (How creative the designs of the monsters, enemies or characters are)
Plot (If the story and/or missions are twisted and well-balanced)
Environment (If the places were designed in a creepy/horrific way in both visuals and gameplay)
Sounds (Of course... On how effective the sounds and music were used to scare the player)

In this way, it won't be judged by quality, but rather by creativity...
The downside of this is that the judges should be creative and artistic...

My suggestion #2
As for judging... The participants are the ones who will judge and pick games by 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, excluding their own game to their list of course. Participants who will not judge will have his/her game removed.
It's pretty similar to some competition rules I saw... (Like 3dtotal)

My suggestion #3
How long the game was played. Longer time = player is scared.
Not effective to some genres though...

I'll probably join this...
And yes, no easteregg this time! LOL

I'm a big horror fan, so I will probably be entering this.

I love the idea of a template, but please make it something about zombies, because working with Frankenstein isn't really that fun.

Both of Mike's suggestions are good.

Ok I like Mikes Idea here about judging on creativity, I think a judging panel could be more efficient at deciding a winner either that or I open a voting thread.

The think 'theme' of this game is suspense, creating tension so that people are scared of what is round the next corner, think Silent Hill.

I think having a theme like this leaves the creativity wide open as people can create suspense in and form.

I will begin this competition towards the end of the week and to make it easier to find I will create a new post in the NVIDIA competition page (good / bad idea)

The rules will be very similar to what Mike Inel laid out above, so if any of you want to get a head start you can.

don't know if you should post it in the nvidia compo forum.. all the posts in the puzzle game compo forum got locked after a while, so you might end up with an abandoned forum with 1 fresh topic.

best stick it in either the WIP forum or the game design theory forum. contact a mod and see what they think.

Might beable to submit a prize or two, I do have an A4 graphics tablet, but I admit it is not very good. It is not a wacom though and it is quite old. The pens need replacing every few months, but its better than nothing

I think comedy is cool in a scary game, it'd make you relax and then... BOO!
For maximum effect have the guy who tells a joke get decapitated a second later

Its only because I worked out my menu for it. And it has some stupid things on there. Well maybe one. But here is a spoiler if a zombie gets you, You'll become one for a limited time and yes this will be a 3d game now. Edit: The start bit is the menu and how it works. The rest is just .avi. But Put together in a WMV.
