Yo, what's up?
I need to get an email account. Which one is best? I heard gmail had some privacy issues or something.

I'm fine with Hotmail... they send me too much spam sometimes though, but that's no big deal.

Not as bad as AOL I'd go with gmail, you can't find a better interface. Gmail's "privacy" issues affect most email providers now that almost all of them have context ads showing up next to your email message. Google doesn't send the content of your email to advertisers.

Gmail is by far the best if you ask me. The privacy issue is really nonsense, they provide you with extremely subtle advertations based upon the text in your email, but ofcourse that's an automated system. Google and privacy is the same thing as Windows and UAC: The media blow it up as if it's the end of the world, everyone assumes it's true, but in the end it's nothing. If you're fine with using Google, you should be fine with using Gmail.

Gmail is extremely fast (something Hotmail seems to have a lot of trouble with), simple, powerful and ofcourse, completely free.

I think google gives you the pop3 server address too, that way you can use a standard email client like outlook or thunderbird to get your gmail delivered to you.

Maybe i'll stick with Google then. I heard that they keep your emails even if you delete them though, and there have been cases of google being forced to give their data to the government and that. I don't really have anything to hide, but it's the principle of the thing.

I don't really understand that POP3 thing. Do you mean you can use an email that isn't online?

What about Yahoo? Is that any good?

You'd be a fool to think any of the big players delete your data. Once you submit info to a company, it is their's forever and ever, none of them will destroy your data.

You'd think there'd be a market for a better service, wouldn't you? Oh well.

Definately gmail. I find it useful for storing files for me to receive at another place. You can also set up your own email extenstion (ie, mine is biofoxgames.com) if you have a server. Very very good service, and have never had trouble with it.

Gmail. It is waaaaay faster than hotmail. The gmail toolbar comes with a little notitfy thing that lets you know of new emails. Pretty nice. in fact... I need to go check my inbox.

Alrighty then. Gmail it is. I'm liking it more than yahoo, because you can copy your own email address from the top of the page and paste it into other stuff. Ta then.

Hotmail gives you 5GB storage, plus it's just had a make over to make it look all Vista-y.

I don't know if it's actually better than GMail but I don't feel any need to change, they seem pretty much identical, I just prefer Hotmail because it integrates well with MSN (in fact, they are both now called Windows Live Messenger and Windows Live Mail, and they seem to be basically the same program).

Gmail rocks. I've totally switched to it. It has the best spam protection, IM in your browser, and lots of other cool things.

Mine's the same old hotmail... The same old slow, boring, half the time: useless, hotmail...
Then again, I tried Live, hated everything about it and opted out, so maybe that's why?

GMail's good, but if you're serious about email, then you'll want to get an email client such as Thunderbird, regardless of how good the web-interface is, they simply can't beat desktop applications.

thunderbird is not a provider, just a client.

Until you're in another location and want to view old emails from the pop3 server.

I think gmail is the best only becase their spam filter seems to work better than anyone elses.

Phaelax,

I know Thunderbird isn't a provider. I was talking in the context of having a Gmail account, and using Thunderbird with it.

With a desktop client, though, the email is only copied locally, so it should be still available on the server from any location, no?

That'll be an option you select on the server, whether or not to delete the email once it's been downloaded.
