Hi we used PHPProjekt for a project and i thought it was average at best, although i've nothing to compare it to. I'd say it would be overkill unless you're planning a huge project.

Have you looked at http://www.dotproject.net ?

Not sure exactly what you're looking for, but Trac is pretty good if you want a wiki, a web interface to an SCM etc

Trac looks interesting, it integrates with Subversion

We're using Trac for a group project here at Uni (a game), and the integration with SVN combined with the Ticket/Roadmap/Milestone feature is brilliant.

If there's something that needs doing, you make a ticket out of it, maybe add a wiki page, then if someone has the inclination, knowledge, or just time, they accept the ticket, complete it, upload to SVN, and mark it as done.

Having said all that, I don't have anything to compare it to...

Personally, I couldn't live without SVN now (having a personal server, and the group one for the game), so that's a must for any project management.
But, other than that, most things could be run through a simple wiki system, or even an email client such as GMail (that everyone on the team has access to) which allows you to tag emails and group them.

Tickets are amazing. I use lotus notes at work and it's the same deal. It's not project oriented though, although I suppose you could make it that. Lotus notes isn't free though, it's more of a corporate thing.

You might be able to set up an old computer as a server at your house and just have people dump stuff on or to use Trac with (although I'm not sure you NEED a standalone server).

I used that once, I now block it in my mail client. It's sooooo annoying, and you can't delete your project.

Sorry for the bump, but is their one that doesn't need a server to work? I've been looking at the ones listed above and they are all pretty much command line/python stuff.

I need something to share content/files with other people. I guess you'd need a server there... but they can't just grab it off your HD? Can I run Apache on my computer and have it act as a server but still use my computer? How much would that resources would that take up?

Sure can.
Doesn't take up too much, as long as you don't have too many people trying to connect (lots of disc reads, etc).

I went with PHProjekt in the end. It has all th eproject management tools including time management, forums, calendars etc.

You can upload, version and lock files. It doesn't track versions and allow you to revert to older copies, but for a small team it lets you manage who is working on what, and make all new updates available to all.

Thats good to hear, I just have 2 people who plan on working with me and they won't need the software to much as they aren't programmers.

PHPProjekt sounds good but the site is in german

I think Trac + Subversion does the same thing only better. My current plan is to install Ubuntu Server 7.04 in Virtual PC (awesome program) and add the Apache, Trac and Subversion Packages. Ideally I would have another computer for this but oh well.

One of the downsides with Virtual PC is that the Ubuntu install takes up a lot of room. I might just take ubuntu and vpc out of the loop to save HD Room...

... Why don't you just do it on Windows?

Why install a whole other OS just for 3 programs?

Take the "English" option

Hosting the repository on a local server may cause you grief down the line, your server needs to be online 24/7. For a two-man project like the one I'm working with, it just didn't make sense.

There are sites available where you can create a 'project' and use trac and svn on their server. Ask Google about it.

Lol to be honest just because of Ubuntu's awesome OS and the fact that starting up the server would be as easy as starting the OS in VPC. Also, looking back at past experiences, Apache and Trac/Subversion dump a crap load of random files around, the majority I don't know what to do with. I was thinking that the Ubuntu setup, even though more disk space would be used, would be cleaner.

Lol, owned I so did not see that

I knew that there would be downtime when my computer is off but I wasn't concerned about that to much as it's usually on.

I did, and you have to pay for them. Plus the notion of setting all this up myself gets me a little geeked

Nice find Jess. I have to admit, I struggled to find a free service. I have just signed up to Assembla to try it out.

That's alright...
I would have pointed these out earlier, I just didn't think that you wanted to have an online system... It never even crossed my mind to be honest
