Ok, so I want to get hold of one golden oldie so I can butcher it by way of remix. The song in question being My Girl by the Temptations. So I've already raided my parents CD collection, but apparently the beetles and motown were their thang, but not the temptations.

So my next port of call was to find out if I could download it for free (legally) cos it's an old track and some of these old bands release their stuff for free once they're happy with their millions. But no, it's not free.

I don't do all these pirate ptp things, so I started looking into these pay-for-download sites, but they all seem to require some sign-up and subscription service. Does anyone know of one where I can bung them a few quid via paypal and get access to a download? No monthly sign-up, no download manager (SPYWARE!!! ) etc.

Any suggestions appreciated.

did you try the iTunes store? I belive you can download single tracks from that, then burn them to cd and re-rip them in whatever format you want.

This is why most people that download PtP stuff do it, it's so hard to get something honestly when the hounds are surrounding everthing.

Gotta admit, I did not try iTunes. I assumed it'd require a big ol' Apple iTunes manager. I remember Apple sneekily putting iTunes on my compo when I got QuickTime a while back and it started taking over! Not an Apple fan here, but if that's a decent way, I'll at least see how they do it there.

I've never bought stuff from itunes, but make sure you can use it in something other than itunes before you buy it, with my experience in itunes you have to convert the songs before they work on your ipod, so make sure you get the original file and not the converted one.

Gah. It's a bit of a pain in the arse this whole thing. I made this from a snippet from the Sony download site though. Toying with the idea if it's worth doing the remix. It's kinda funky ...

Well if you're in the US (or perhaps even if you're not), you could consider www.walmart.com. It's only 88c a song. Most are protected WMA format, but that shouldn't pose much of a problem for anyone who calls themselves a programmer . I believe you do need to download some small plugin for your browser or something, but there's at least no subscription service.

walmart.com and maybe amazon too (i think i might have seen single song purchase on there once)

iTunes works for purchasing that one song you need badly to (i've had to do that once).

Looks like you've got your track, but for future reference, believe it or not, I've always been quite happy with Tesco for music downloads - http://www.tescodownloads.com. 79p per track I think, and as far as I recall, it's dead easy.
