After much searching for the perfect dvd cabinet, I decided to build my own as nothing appealed to my tastes. I'm really into antique furniture, mainly victorian or gothic revival. The problem is, it's probably the hardest stuff to make yourself. I could easily build square, contemptorary furniture but its boring to look at. So I got some tools, just bought a table saw last week, and waiting on a few more books from amazon about basic wood carving(which tools to buy and how to maintain them) and another book on building period-style furniture. Already got a book thats about 300 pages of nothing but joinery(very important) and another book on general woodworking.

Any tips for a beginner furniture maker? I'm not a complete noob, I do have a background in framing and general house construction. I'm still working on the blueprints for my dvd cabinet.

Hey, I was just about to start a thread on this same topic.

I've been making cabinets with my father since I was about 8, but I don't have much experience with furniture making. I've pretty much taken over the business for him over the last couple of years. We've got a 2500 sq. foot shop with some pretty decent equipment. Off the top of my head:

Table saw (with about a 5' x 9' table built around it)
Dust collector
5hp 20" Planer
5hp shaper
2 12" Miter Saws
7.5hp Air compressor
Several routers
Line boring machine
European hinge machine
Horizontal Boring machine
Kremlin AAA spray system
2 Dynabrade air sanders
50" Drum sander
Edge Sander
Drill Press

Several staple guns, brad guns, drills, etc.

And...My baby, my own homemade CNC router. I'm currently trying to figure out how to build a full-size (4'x8') router. Main limitation is space.

BTW, if you're looking for a good woodworking forum, I suggest http://www.woodweb.com I mostly read the stuff relating to cabinet making, but there are forums there for furniture, etc.

I've always loved woodworking, but I'm doing it to make money, not really as a hobby. The CNC router is my newest hobby. It allows me to mix my computer skills with woodworking.

Cool, that cnc router must be a dream to have. Here's a simplified version of what I want to create. I cut down on the detail after researching more about how hard that old victorian style was gonna be.

Even steam wood bending takes some careful work.

That looks cool. Have fun bending that top radius piece. If it were me, I'd borrow the use of a vacuum press, but I don't know if that option is available to you.

If I were you, buy a good quality band-saw - getting one of these will make your life of making beautiful joints so much easier. Along with this, a good quality set of chisels will help immensely.

For that top curved piece, you might want to try laminating smaller lengths of wood in a arch and then cutting out the proper shape from it (see the attached image - sorry about it being hand drawn).

I'd prefer to not use laminate or veneer.

I've been wanting to get a bandsaw so I can build guitars.
