Recently carried home a relatively big but extremely light box. I ordered a 4GB USB memory stick (Sandisk Titanium Cruiser) and a cooling platform for my overheating laptop last week. Been thinking about getting one for some time since it's so annoying when my laptop stops working from the heat, but I wasn't sure how useful it would be.

The platform is way smaller then I thought it would be (about 13") and the plastic feels really cheap. Well, I had to test it as soon as I had it unpacked. I put it under my running and slightly hot laptop and plugged it into a USB port. The two fans that sucks the air from under the laptop and blows it out in the back have an annoying low pitched noise but they are not as loud as the small built in fan (which pretty much drowns the platform's sound). After a few minutes the laptop fan stopped and the laptop itself was about as cold as when it's turned off. I can't believe the result.

I've not done anything demanding so far, just watched a movie, but the fan have remained silent. Man, I could even sleep with the laptop on now. And it's so small that I can easily fit it into my laptop bag. It's also cheap, about 20 USD + VAT. Best thing I've wasted my money on since I bought Guitar Hero 2. At least I think so, we'll see how it preforms under gaming conditions

How the heck does a laptop overheat? Do they not test these things AT ALL!?

When, for example, playing a game the laptop runs at maximum power and because the fan sucks in air from underneath it, it usually can't get enough cold air.

Well, for heaven's sake, why aren't there small side fans or ones above the keyboard? It's a lapTOP, not a lapUNDER.

See if it has a panel that opens at the bottom where you can clean the heatsink. My Dell 1300 does but my last one meant removing the keyboard to clean and removing loads of screws.

When buying a laptop go for Pentium M / Core 2 Duo because they run on low voltages and low tempratures.

My last IBM laptop was using a Celeron and it would overheat and slow down if I tried to play games for more than 20mins. Very annoying!

usually laptop overheating problems happen because they get to damn dusty (same with desktops but no where near as show stopping)

quick fix, blow quite hard in one set of vent ports then the other. it won't cure the dust problem but should provide you with a couple of months without overheating.

Thanks for the advice guys, I should see what I can do.

However, this laptop have been overheating since it was new. Of course it's gotten worse and if I can make it better then combined with the platform (actually called a pad on the box) it might give me a good result. It's amazing how cold my laptop runs now when I'm not playing games, not done any serious gaming yet.

BTW, it's a Intel Centrino. I also got an ATI Mobility 9700 that probably contributes to the heat when playing games.
