Why is it that I find Unreal more complicated than Unity?

Theoretically, using Blueprints should be easier... but I usually find myself, after many failed attempts at "blueprinting" something, thinking "man this would be so much easier in C# in Unity...".

So I guess I will stick to Unity for my current project after all. Really the only reason I wanted to use Unreal was its better level design features, but I suppose I shall just use Blender and ProBuilder for that now.

Oooh... I just had an idea... We should start a weekly forum newsletter!! Anybody else think this idea is awesome? It could have headlines like "FORMER VICE PRES RETURNS: IN SHOCK AT NEW DEVELOPMENTS"

I assume it's because it's a different way of doing things. If you started out without knowing how to program, blueprints would probably be easier but if you already know programming, it's easier to do.

What's so bad about that?

For this game it's the easiest way to keep the data persistent. There are various techniques of course, but this way I can easily control many parts of the program just by calling something like "StateManager.Instance.GetLives()", for example. Or "StateManager.Instance.SaveGame()".

There is a long 5-15 minute advert [I mean come the .... on... they even have 1-2+ hour adverts lmao] and then I noticed there were AD dots along its timeline, I figured this was for the main feature video and then I noticed the music on the advert changed and [I am not always watching the screen just passively listening to the main feature while working] suddenly noticed a pattern shift... then looked at the video and saw that at the next AD marker IT PLAYED ANOTHER AD INSIDE THE AD!!!

Not so keen on using programs like AdBlock, and only have the issues of ADS on YT, as it is the only google service I cannot replace at the moment lol so not too bothered, I already block third party content on sites... that is built into pretty much all browsers now...

But still... Ads on YT are getting ridiculous... if they were not repetitive [IE the same ad all day... if they made the ads relevant and on topic... and not play the same ad as if I were watching I dunno... TV... then maybe it would be tolerable lol

I think this marketing team should have continued making ads like this for every XBOX release... but I guess this ad getting banned did not help that...

Lol good one!

Question for all of you Europeans... Is this type of interchange common there in the UK/Europe in general? Never seen such a thing here in the United States. It's like a roundabout and a highway interchange combined... We Americans, by the way, have very few roundabouts. They are catching on these days, but only in the super fancy, high class, new developments.

Also, what are those lines on the highway off ramps? It seems they are more closely spaced as the actual interchange nears; perhaps you're supposed to use them as a guide for decelerating?

Oh, and those fancy criss crossed lines on the road too... What do those do? We have none of these fancy lines on our roads here in the US.

This here is a very typical interchange in the States:

Quite normal yes, there are more complex systems too...

Yeah speed indicators to tell you to slow down basically... we also have turn off markers that go from 3 2 1 with diagonal lines in a layer cake manner... lemme see if I can find it...

You will see the three point marker first and then I think 100 meters later the 2 and then another 100 meters later the 1 and then you make your turn off...

But don't take my description for it lol I am not a driver anyway... maybe someone can clear that one up..

Look through this stuff too...

http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=UK+highway+code+signs&id=E0F30C27EB332713A311B995572B8B50E1ADA2AB&FORM=IQFRBA

TGC even have a product based on the driving test stuff...

EDIT

Quote: "Oh, and those fancy criss crossed lines on the road too... "

The yellow ones? they mean NO STOPPING ON THIS SPOT

EDIT

You have to remember the landmass in the UK is puny compared to the north Americas...

After a quick search lol http://resources.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk/customs/questions/compare/usa.htm

This search brought up some interesting finds... http://www.bing.com/search?q=UK+land+mass+compared+to+the+US&src=IE-TopResult&FORM=IETR02&conversationid=

Are those non-skippable. I have not seen a really long unskippable ad in a long time. Also, those ad dots were probably in the actual video.

Some aren't... but the point is... if anybody ever had anything longer than 1-5 minutes for an ad on TV back when I used to watch it, that channel would be put under review lol

I wonder what the average USA citizen would do if they saw this interchange? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravelly_Hill_Interchange... we have some complex interchanges here in the UK but this is the most complex...

True, but I would rather stick with the tool most familiar to me with this game project. I tried to use unreal but just can't quite wrap my head around it yet. It really seems to be a tool designed for multiple user to use for a single project, since all of the features are just there. It could do with some interface clean up for sure!

Very interesting stuff MrValentine!

Very interesting; I don't think we have any standard thing that indicates that, other than perhaps a custom sign that says so.

That magic roundabout is crazy! I myself have a hard time properly executing a roundabout as is (not a bad driver, they're just super rare here), so that would be pretty intense.

Here is a fun interchange near where I live, called the "Mousetrap" by locals. It's the intersection of I-70 and I-25 in Denver, Colorado.

I see this sort of stuff in frollywood movies and ponder why on earth anybody would build multiple crossover bridges so often when a single bridge would suffice... [Die Hard 4]

The opposite is true where I live. I drive through 8 roundabouts when I got to uni and I think there are over 40 roundabouts in total in relatively small my town.

Would it there? That's an intersection of two high speed roads (65 mph limits), so some really big curves are necessary for safety; naturally, that forces the lanes to be rather spaced out at the actual crossing, thus requiring multiple bridges. Lower speed/lower volume intersections, however, generally use just one bridge.

I must say, the multi-bridge intersections are fun to drive through. There is another one near where I live, and one particular bridge you can drive on is probably several thousand feet long, passes you over multiple other bridges, and passes you under at least one other bridge. Fun stuff! It's like 2D road navigation gone 3D.

Try this one on for size:

I spot one bridge going over another bridge that goes over yet another bridge that goes over a road on the ground. Dandy!

It's pretty common in Australia too. The road acts like a massive roundabout.

Quote: "Also, what are those lines on the highway off ramps? It seems they are more closely spaced as the actual interchange nears; perhaps you're supposed to use them as a guide for decelerating?"

I haven't seen them often, but they do exist in Australia. (The progressively closer-together lines, I mean - not the criss-cross lines) AFAIK they're to make sure you're awake and slowing down (as in, "The freeway's ending, wake up you lazy git and start taking notice of what you're doing!").

Quote: "Very interesting; I don't think we have any standard thing that indicates that, other than perhaps a custom sign that says so."

Really?? That's so weird. Australia definitely has "no stopping" markings on the roads. A yellow line along the side of the road means that, as well as the criss-cross lines.

Ah right, I forgot about that. There are certain colors of curb painting here (forget what, possibly yellow) that indicate no stopping allowed. Those seem to be aimed more toward stopping people from parking, however, as opposed to the criss cross lines which seem to be for safety and traffic congestion purposes.

News:

Humans is an excellent show. One of the best sci-fi shows in a long time.

Dark Matter is pretty good after two episodes. Hope it stays this good.

My LG G Watch R has very good battery life. After a full day of moderate use it still has 62% remaining. Also, I found a brilliant app for it called Wearable Widgets, which lets you display phone widgets on your watch. I use it to display my torch app's widget to control my phone's camera flash.

Unturned is an great game and totally free. Much better since 3.0 went main branch because the new fat-server, thin-client model greatly reduces (or eliminates) hacking.

So for the game I am making, it wouldn't be any sort of copyright infringement if I made a sort of "Overworld Map" from which the levels are accessible, would it? As long as I came up with a unique way of doing it?

I basically just want each world to have sort of a hub from which they player can go forward, or go back to play another level. The Mario games do this the best but I want to make sure I wouldn't be able to be sued over some sort of general IP claim.

I suppose as long as it had it's own style and not a direct copy...

But then I don't know, not seen many games do that outside of Nintendo...

Perhaps find some Video Game Lawyers [They exist] and post them the question maybe?

So... someone stole several hundred metres of fibre optic cabling from our local exchange and our internet has been up and down for the past 48 hours while they replace it all.

Basically a company called 'BT Open Reach' manages the network and defines what you can and cannot choose of Fibre options...

I was on a maximum 76D/19U and now even though I can get over 50-60 downstream they decided the line only supported 38... even though I had proof it can handle more than what they are saying... so I accepted the reduction in uplink from up-to 19 down to 9.5 and a downstream from average 60 now limited to 38, the only benefit of it all is I save a little cash on my broadband budget... :/ :/

The importance of my broadband being fast relates to how much just one of my systems reports; I used over the past 60 days... 1.6TB~ and on my new gamer rig I downloaded some 450~GB of steam games alone just last week...

For me the uplink was more important than the downlink, having the bandwidth for my server in-house was critical for more users accessing it...[Now removed though] also for future game server testing... now I have a 33%~ reduction in bandwidth/tunnelling whatever... :/

The good news is I might be able to get the higher rate in a new property when I move...

I always stream XBOX Video movies in HD all night long while sleeping tallies up to over 24GB a day love that repeat option! mind you Amazon Prime HD video sucks badly also no repeat feature...

My mobile reports I have used over 17GB over WiFi in the past 30 days, but then that was mainly the phone data backup feature... another 2GB on mobile data...

Yeah I suppose I am classed as a HEAVY USER lmao

That wouldn't be a copyright violation, but someone could have patented it I suppose. I very much doubt you have anything to worry about unless your game gets big enough for some patent troll to notice you. Hopefully by then you'll have enough for a lawyer.

my ISP plan is for 100Mbps, I generally get around 20 on speed tests, though the last month or two it has plunged to 2 - 5 on testing quite frequently. this is with a cable provider.

we have qualified for google fiber however and installs begin in our area next week. 1Gbps for $70 / month

cannot wait to ditch the cable

on both plans, it's supposed to be the same up as down, on the existing cable, upload tests at 15-20 pretty steady.

I'll be pretty surprised if google does manage a steady 1Gbps up, but we will see

ill be pretty happy if they can keep a stable 50 down 20 up

I cannot understand what happened to the UK, we are so far behind the rest of the world now :/

Might consider investing in a huge dedicated line in future lol

EDIT

Found this hilarious sub note on the BT website...
