What are your opinions on the new Solid State Hard Drives. I am thinking about setting up a 128 GB sold state raid for my next laptop.

Do you have ungodly amounts of money? Because my guess is that they will come out at around 10,000 dollars or some higher price until the generic producers get their hands on it in a couple years.

Seriously...thats still really expensive for a 128GB HD, i would wait until they are as cheap as regular HDs, then regular HDs will be even cheaper lol.

who would spend 1800 for a hard drive O_o. Seriously, for 1800 dollars you can get 18 terabytes of regular storage (probably more)

No noise, increase battery life, cuts down on system heat, faster.

I can't see any reason not to get it.

I'm all for it when the price comes down. No moving parts = no hard drive crashes. This is the future!

I think solid state is definitely the future storage device (or should be). I'd love to see memory cards replace CDs and DVDs. No scratching, takes up such a small amount of space. But right now that's too expensive for me. LOL.

Yeah, I really wish I had 1800$ to just blow on anything... It certainly wouldn't be on a measly 128 gigs... I'd rather put a down payment on a new (used) car.

You all seriously. When you are doing modeling, design and video production professionaly you need state of the art hardware in order to increase your productivity.

If you play life being cheap, then you will never amount to anything.

You have to spend money to make money

GO CUBS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Except the solid state drives out right now are only as fast if not slower than traditional hdds

I was told they were twice as fast and had magical power rendering skills as well as other magic powers.

So I don't have to point out how ridiculously expensive they are. They are also only really speedy when reading small files. They have much lower access times then HDDs which basically means they accelerates faster. Also they don't have to be spun up to speed which also increases speed, laptop HDDs are turned off often to save battery. On larger files access times make less difference. SSDs also have a lower write speeds then read speeds. I don't know how they compare to HDD write speeds though.

If you are doing video rendering you are much better off with a large rack of RAID 0 HDDs that can take huge amounts of data at an incredibly speed because they write to multiple discs at once. If you say write data to 4 discs instead of 1 you cut down on disc time to 25% (not counting access times).

SSDs are currently good for regular laptop usage because they are less vulnerable to shakes, take up much less power and the short access times are great for things that doesn't require much drive activity like programming, Office and surfing the Web. But then they cost more then the laptop itself.

You would need to win the lottery to spend that much on 128GB Harddrives

Its expensive, yeah... so what? thats the price of the Pro stuff, normal HDs broke so easily and heat easily too, when you are working in something professional you need security and you would usually make three different backup in three different HDs (apart from the hd it has the SO partition), you cant lose any work or data, because you will lose many time, and time its money... but if you have something like these SSD´s you will increase your productivity to at least 200% and your data will be secure enough to work with confidence without extra backups

If you are a professional and you need them to your work, go straight and buy them.

My two cents...

There have been times I've popped a jump drive or a memory card in and all or some of my data was damaged or missing. There's no be all end all for file security yet. Everything is prone to corruption in some form or another.

1800$ on a 128gb hard drive that runs a tad faster and cooler is not worth it, seriously, I can't even understand the logic in this when you could have almost 8 terrabytes of storage between a few hard drives. You could have them automatically make backups of each other and things like that. Whatever, it's his money. If he has enough to spend on this, more power to him.

1800 dollars and you could have 15 harddrives each backing up a 500 gig harddrive

If stability is the issue then running a few HDDs in RAID 1 should do the trick. RAID 1 writes the same data to all HDDs. Say you have an external 5 disc rack you get 5 copies of all data stored on the rack. Personally the RAID 0 and multiple space and speed option is a much sweeter choice. Well, it depends on if it's speed & storage or stability you're after.

I say it again. SSDs are only for those who plan to work anywhere and everywhere with tasks that doesn't require a lot of space or long read/write times.

Another problem with flash based drives is their limited lifespan. Flash memory only have a few thousand writes per cluster.

So it's safe to say solid state drives are *less* of a secure storage medium

well there good for speed, no crashing, less power and quite; but there not good for a hard drive that is used all the time. Thats y there only flash drives atm.

SSD advantages:
1. Lightning fast small reads
2. Lower power consumption and heat
3. Less vulnerable to shakes
4. Less vulnerable to degradation
5. Less affected by fragmentation

SSD disadvantages:
1. Risk of complete loss of data
2. Slower sequential read speed
3. Slower write speed
4. Vulnerability to abrupt power loss, magnetic fields and electric/static shocks
5. Limited writes (100.000 - 300.000)
6. PRICE !!!

WOW! It's only 640 GB but it's lightning fast.

160 parallel channels, a normal flash drive have 1-2

It handles 8 simultaneous streams at once (a hard drive can do 1). So they can move data equivalent of 8 DVDs in 40 seconds (one 1 DVD in 5 seconds!).

It's so fast that when loading say a game the CPU is the bottleneck, not the drive

About 30 USD per GB. Available in Q4 or Q1.
