Geek Culture / Zooming in Photoshop - chunky pixels

I'm sure lots of people here use Photoshop regularly, I'm wondering why on earth the zoom tool has to make everything look chunky.

Paint Shop Pro, and many other tools have tiered zoom levels so the pixels never lose their perfection. Any kind of work zoomed in or out in Photoshop is ugly with detail loss, and it's really a letdown, it makes it much harder to work with the image and it's not pleasing to the eye. Is there an option anywhere to keep the pixels clean and perfect while zooming, or can I set zoom levels somehow? It's really annoying having to type in the values myself each time I'd like it to go to a pixel perfect zoom level. Maybe there's a plugin or something for this?

Well, if this annoys you as much as me at least tell me

There is no detail loss

your probably compairing Bitmaps vs Vectors

also never save in jpg and expect to edit it later because that is a lossy compression

Nah, I'm talking about the zoom tool, but actually I just figured it out. Funny how that works as soon as you post a question you figure out the answer to it.

If you press Shift+Alt+Mouse Scroll you can zoom in and out at more near pixel perfect levels.

Before I was only doing Alt+Mouse Scroll. Look at the differences in zooming to see what I mean GatorHex. Take an image, maybe something cartoony with outlines so you can really see the pixel distortion with ALT+Mouse Scroll, then try Shift+Alt+Scroll.

Nevermind everyone, my last pet peeve with Photoshop is now gone

oh, you were talking about the weird intermediate zooms like 66%

I don't have a sig, live with it.

They have the scroll wheel zoom feature, you just have to hold ALT. It then does their ridiculous zoom with all the wierd levels that distort pixels. You have to hold Alt and Shift, then use the scroll wheel. Then it's all good.

I agree with that in some cases Gator, hehe. I'm getting used to it though. Haha.

Go with The GIMP - I've been using it for years and can knock out most things I've been asked for (all the graphics for my websites are made in GIMP, same with T-Shirt designs)

Too late, already spent multiple hundreds of dollars on Photoshop ^_^ I don't much like the Gimp, and the Gimp would be a downgrade to me because I was using Corel Paint Shop Pro X before I got Photoshop a few weeks ago. So I've been migrating to Photoshop, and recently I decided to learn Blender. I feel like my tools have gotten all that much more professional the last few weeks, hehe.

Get GIMP Shop:

Quote: "GIMPshop is a modification of the free/open source GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP), intended to replicate the feel of Adobe Photoshop. Its primary purpose is to make users of Photoshop feel comfortable using GIMP.

It shares all GIMP's advantages, including the long feature list and customisability, while addressing some common criticisms regarding the program's interface: GIMPshop modifies the menu structure to closely match Photoshop's, adjusts the program's terminology to match Adobe's, and, in the Windows version, uses a plugin called 'Deweirdifier' to combine the application's numerous windows in a similar manner to the MDI system used by most Windows graphics packages. While GIMPshop does not support Photoshop plugins, all GIMP's own plugins, filters, brushes, etc. remain available.

Due to the changes to the interface, many Photoshop tutorials can be followed in GIMPshop unchanged, and most others can be adapted for GIMPshop users with minimal effort. "

Well lucky you with all that money! I myself use paint.NET. It's actually pretty decent after you get some of the plugins (okay, a LOT of the plugins). I've made some pretty decent stuff with it though, like my new sig which i made a while ago actually.

Sounds cool, but it's too late Jess, I already spent 350$ on CS3 (got it 50% off for buying a Wacom tablet) Plus, I gotta learn the "industry standard" sooner or later .

Just because Gimp is free doesn't make it a worse (or necessarily better) program. I would personally consider the gimp an upgrade from paint shop pro

Well, for some of us, it's hard enough to make rent, and afford food, let-alone spend that much on software (which, I think I've shown, can be had for free).

I have nothing against the fact that Gimp is free. I just don't like the Gimp, PSP's flow is far superior to the Gimp's in my opinion. I have nothing against free and open source tools. In fact, as I stated above I just started using Blender, which is free and open source.

I have yet to meet one person who uses Gimp in the industry. Fortunately (or unfortunately how you look at it) everyone uses PhotoShop for 2D work.

Why on earth would someone recommend Gimp to an already-photoshop user?

Agent, are you talking about bitmaps or vector? Sounds like you're working with pixels, yet expecting vector results?

Ahh, that's because PS became the defacto standard long before GIMP got good enough to use. Now, everyone's PS mad and if an employer hears them say "No, I know how to use GIMP", they wont get the job.
It's the same with 3D Studio Max vs Blender, yeah?

I worked for 3 years before heading to Uni to save up for my PC, and for rent.
All my savings got spent in about 3 months.
Now, I'm using pre-paid internet at Uni, so I can only use what I've paid for (painful, since it's charged by the MB, so video's, game downloads, etc, are all out).

Thank you, but $700 on software is easily 7 weeks of meals, or 5 weeks of rent.

No, no, no. I'm just talking about using the magnifying glass (zoom tool) If you use Alt-scroll wheel then it zooms by wierd increments. If you do Alt-Shift-Scroll Wheel, then it zooms by increments that will not harm the pixel size ratio. If you don't know what I mean, take a tablet and scribble some lines, use the various zoom features and see how the edges get jagged and choppy, not retaining the proper pixel ratios. I don't know a better way to describe it, but it has nothing to do with actually scaling an image, vector or otherwise ^_^

I miss your point, I guess. Why aren't you fasting yet? Come on man, Photoshop!
