I'm tired of random battles and maintaining parties. Anyone know of any good RPGs or adventures for PS2 (new or old) where I can just run around solo like in Morrowind or Zelda.

Well, I can take as much party management as in Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2. As far as non Guitar Hero games go I guess KH2 is my favourite PS2 game so far, it's not perfect but the gameplay is quite enjoyable most of the time. God of War is also quite fun but I would like it more if I wasn't on a set track.

I got tired of watching my 6 "healers" battle on their own in Final Fantasy XII. Not to mention how annoyingly tired I am of the same "random" battle every 10 steps in FFX.

Try looking for the following: Dark Cloud, Aluandra (Zelda style game play), um...Dark Cloud 2, Aluandra 2 (not as good as the first). Hope that helps, also try watching these games in action on U-tube, thats where i usually get my next game purchase ideas from.

Thanks Ark. I recall the name Dark Cloud but I've never tried it, never heard about Aluandra. I'll be checking those out.

Forgot to mention, in case anyone tries to suggest it, I've played and liked Okami. A great Zelda like game but with a unique look and the unique paint brush game mechanic. Once you get past the long intro sequence

Ark:
After a quick search I didn't find any info on Aluandra.

Aaron:
Isn't that just a beat em up game? Well, I took a quick look at what Gamespot thought and apparently they thought it was too short.

Anyone tried Baldurs Gate: Dark Alliance? Gamespot seemed to like it.

Suikoden 2 is, in my opinion, the best RPG ever made. But it isn't solo. There are actually 108 players that you can recruit, and have a party of 6. The game takes about 15-25 hours to beat, but if you take your time and get all of the items, 30-40 hours.

Aluandra is a PS1 game, try looking at Amizon.com: keep searching if zelda style games are your thing then this game is well worth the hunt.

Roxas:
Thanks for clearing that up

Ark:
Vagrant Story sounds fun but since it's a PS1 game (as with Alundra) it's not as likely that I'll be playing it.

Gil:
I'm quite aware of both series thank you

My favorite RPG for ps2 is Dragon Quest VIII. I spent 140 hours on it lol and I still play it from time to time. It's really a great game.

Let's see how many people actually take the time to read this...

Alundra 2 and Vagrant Story are just brilliant games.

Also, Jade Cocoon 2 is a decent RPG.

Shadow of the Colossus (if you like zelda you'll love this!)
Avatar - Legend of Aang (oddly this was actually good)
Phantasy Star (didn't like it myself, but it plays the same on/offline)
Zone of the Enders (there's a few in the series, and difficult to get ahold of.. only problem i had with them is each game is short. I mean about 3-4hrs TOTAL)
Drakenguard 1&2 (both are excellent solo rpgs games)
Okami (Zelda for the PS2)
.hack//sign (series of 4 games, solo rpg with heavy storyline that is a simulated mmorpg VERY RARE)
Monster Hunter (solo/online rpg, pretty sweet)
PsiOps (alright so not an action-adventure, or solo rpg exactly; but you do level throughout the game; very under-rated imo)

Zombie:
Got that one for PC, great game too. I got all the discs and photos on the first playthrough

Raven:
Shadow of Colossus gets so boring after a while. The first Zone of the enders also got pretty boring and repetitive quite early. Got Okami already, great game. Maybe I should give the .hack games a try, I didn't like the first anime series and been staying away from everything .hack since. Thanks for all the tips.

Ok, had time to try some Dark Cloud yesterday and I must say I was disapointed in the overall quality of the game. I have played a really old SNES game called Soul Blazer that is quite similar to this game but with an overall more fleshed out world. So far Dark Cloud is basically the same boring caves, randomly generated. The weapon system is also very complex and if you multiply that with multiple playable characters then it's a lot to manage. The fact that weapons break quickly and you get thirsty all the time is really annoying. Not to forget the horrible animations and flat boring environment. The only really good thing is the polygon count and texture resolution.

The seemingly complete lack of polish gives this game a first look rating of 3/5 (playable but nothing special). Compared to say Zelda: Ocarina of Time, that I would say is one of the best games ever created, this is a cheap copy. It does everything OOT does good badly and adds a lot of interesting features in a bad way.

Yeah I could have told you that The game becomes tedious at times, and doesn't really pay off in the end. Towards the end of the game there is a 100 level dungeon that takes hours to go through to unlock Toan's best weapon. I had completed it a few years ago then sold it... Then decided to buy it again for like $5.

I would recommend Rogue Galaxy, it has random battles, but the combat is real time. But if you thought the weapon system in Dark Cloud was complex you will probably be even more turned off by Rogue Galaxy.

If you like Hack and Slash type games, Champions of Norrath, and Champions of Norrath: Return to Arms are good, as well as Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, and Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance 2.

Can't believe no one has mentioned Fahrenheit!
That game kicks ass, reminds me of the old adventure games

I've rented Okami and thought it was great, every angle looked like concept art! The longest intro to a game ever though! Was getting a bit frustrated with that, and the stupid noises people make when they talk, and the little bouncing guy who never stops bouncing! But yeah it was still cool

Batman Begins is surprisingly fun. I wouldn't recommend buying it as it is quite a short game. The beginning is boring and simple and had me thinking "oh no not another crap film game" but after a while it stops hinting at you and you have to work things out yourself
It is essentially a fighting and evasion game; although the fighting isn't that great it is quite challenging in some parts. The interesting unique feature is that you can scare the crap out of your enemies by sneaking around and blowing up gas cannisters or knocking out the suspensions for the platform they're standing on etc. this will make them drop their guns and the Area Fear will rise making them easier to fight one on one.
I liked this game because there's also a bit of a puzzle element to it too.
A bad thing is... Batman can double jump! Why? lol

Krilik:
Good to hear someone here recommends Dark Alliance, I was about to pick that up and hope it's more addictive then Dark Cloud. Also thanks for the heads up on the boring parts of DC

Zombie:
I've played through Diablo 1 and 2 a long time ago. Quite some fun but I have something against games built on constantly drinking health potions, that's just poor game design if you ask me.

OBese:
Yeah, Okami is quite different and quite fun. Although it feels a bit too kiddie with the low difficulty and the story. Over all a great game.

Maybe I'll check out Fahrenheit later.

I've played some Dark Alliance now and I wish it was a bit more then just a simple Diablo clone, biggest difference is that I can block and jump. I wish they had done a better job with the camera at points. And who's the idiot that suggested annoying jump puzzle that doesn't make any sense? Still good quality overall, the game looks great and I love the speech and dialog closeups. The sexy innkeeper is a nice addition, or should I say two I give it 4/5, worth playing but not great.

The downside of DA is how repetitive it gets. It's not a game I can just sit and play for hours, like with Kingdom Hearts or Jak & Daxter. This is an example of how you make a big game with little money. The environments are basically the same parts repeated over and over and filled with monsters and objects. It would have been so easy to make this game a lot better but I'm gonna have to lower my rating to 3.5, tops.

Probably the best thing about this game is that I get more and more points to spend every level. I really like that idea compared to the games where you have to save up points from level to level to get the upgrades you want. And the game looks fantastic without any visible lag.

Dark Alliance is boring as hell, I've still not been bothered to complete it on the GameCube yet; even with my brothers help.
Every so often get the urge to play, but then remember how irritating it is.

Especially as after a while enemies end up as recoloured more powerful versions of what you've already faced.

Farienheit isn't really an rpg, but it's a cool game. That said it's too... well not to say linear as it has multiple endings for every scene based on how well you do or what reactions you give and when. Still after completeing it once, didn't have the urge to ever pick it up again. No where near as good as Nomad Soul imo which was PC-only iirc

Also the sex scene, completely unecessary. I did like Silent Hill 3 though, it's getting further from what you were hoping for; but it's not as really scarey as the other games, far more adventuring and puzzling going on in an ever changing world. Get some nice ways to enhance your characters abilities throughout the game too via different weaponry and tools.

best of the series imo, with a decent storyline that makes almost no sense until you complete it. but it was nice to see the lead character was saying "WTF!" just as much as I was lol
