He hooked 2 Guitar Hero controllers to a PC with a software that translates your button presses into midi. This is way better then the Wii loop guy For all of us who can't play on a real guitar and don't have the time to learn this is quite something.

Ok, so the band sounds like crap but the idea is cool

I don't have time to learn how to play a real guitar, it's much harder then playing GH and I don't get any score I only mentioned this because I think it's a cool idea but I'm not very likely to ever plug my controllers to a PC.

Aw well alrighty then, but good luck with it if you do..it'd be pretty cool, I saw people play the theme of cannon fodder on game controllers, they had mapped the sounds which was really sweet.

I have that same joystick (The Arcade), it's a classic - actually re-wired it onto an old USB controller for playing ST games.

What would be cool is if they made more 360 stuff that supports the guitar, like Jam Sessions on the DS, something that lets you play chords would be fairly cool.

I had the urge to test if my PS2 to USB converter could detect a GH controller and it can detect everything except the whammy bar. Yes, even the tilting. I then realized that it wouldn't be hard to load a sample and use Enhanced Audio to change the pitch.

By pressing different combinations of the 5 buttons on the controller you could get a total of 31 different sounds. Tilting the guitar up could for example make you play a different sample, for solos etc. One could also use 62 different samples to make it sound more realistic. Start and Select could be used to switch between sets of samples.

Due to the simplicity I'm quite tempted to try out the pitch switch. Anyone got some nice guitar or bass samples? Let me know

I got a lot of cool ideas I would like to implement into this program. But it will be a little bedroom project with whatever energy is left when I'm not working on SGT or some web project. But I think I'm gonna manage a first pitch shift based test this week. Look for it in the WIP board later.

AWESOME someone has finally bothered to do it! as for those who say play a real guitar, well heck, tell that to a pianist, they push keys to hit strings of a certain note.

I hope this guy releases the codez so I can use my hookup on it. Also they are releasing a controller for the pc soon. Can't wait.

You mean they do that as a substitute to actually hitting the strings themselves?

electronic pianos (synthesizers) don't use strings at all, they still require skill to play

Of course they still require skill, you play them just like you do a piano.

This discussion is getting a little silly.

Guitar Hero is to playing a guitar like Sing Star is to singing on your own and DDR is to actual dancing. It's a game and not the real thing.

The fun part is that you get all these songs with all the background music and your guitar sounds exactly right without having to adjust your equipment, it's really convenient and you get the notes on your TV to follow just like singing karaoke. You get scores and ratings and you do things you don't do on a real guitar, like the star power and keeping your multiplier high. You can also play with or against a friend and say thing like "I beat Play With Me on expert" and people will know how great your are just like if you played through any other game on the hardest setting.

And if you say "why should I play Guitar Hero when I can just play on a real guitar" I just wonder why you play any game at all when you can play on your guitar. Guitar Hero is a GAME made by real guitar players and that is enjoyed by other real guitar players and non guitar players alike.

How do you explain to someone who have not played Guitar Hero the joy of finally beating the game on expert or playing through a song without missing a single note? How do you describe the feel of playing the last solo of Search and Destroy, hitting every sweet sounding note on the intro to Sweet Child of Mine or nailing all those pull-offs and hammer-ons on Freebird?

Go rent Guitar Hero 2 and just try it out. Coffee helps with the eye/hand coordination

If I say something like "I finally got 5 stars on both Arterial Black and Collide on expert" (which I just did) or if I say "I've hit 100% of all notes on 8 songs on expert so far" (and counting...) most people can understand what I'm on about even if they have not played the game. That's pretty cool! You don't get that with a real guitar because most haven't a clue how hard it's to even play properly on one.

5 stars on Stop and if my left hand wasn't aching so bad I'd get 4 stars on Beast and the Harlot. I figured I could do with some endurance training so I've been pushing it today like I used to do before. The problem with Guitar Hero is that you get a bit bored of the songs after 17 months There are in the region of 150 songs for PS2 though.

Face it Benjamin, playing music on a GH Controller would be freaking awesome. But it's not a guitar or a piano, it's a GH Controller

No. Guitar hero is to playing guitar like whack-a-mole is to defending your house against a zombie onslaught with just a shotgun and a stapler.

They're not similar at all. In any way. They (guitars and the controllers) have the same shape, and... oh wait that's about it...

Demons Breath:
Same shape is not the end of it. You have 5 frets that can be combined into chords. You make out the notes/chords on the fret board and you strum to make a sound similar to using a pick. You have to hold the frets to sustain notes/chords. The frets work just like on a real guitar, you can hold a lower note and a higher note and the higher note will be played. You can also do hammer-ons and pull-offs like a real guitar. You have a whammy bar to bend the sound. You can do pretty much anything (in a simplified way) except tapping, bending strings and similar advanced techniques that really requires strings.

you have 5 frets. That's kinda limiting in itself. Can you really see many people buying an album that was made with guitar hero? (apart from for the novelty value). How are you supposed to challenge musical conventions when you can't even cover the basics.

How are the dynamics? I'm not even talking about pinched harmonics and suchlike which would come across as "advanced techniques" in your book but can you switch between playing really calm quiet stuff to really agressive stuff just by how hard you play? Where's the creativity?

Got 5 stars on "Laid to rest" and 4 stars on "Carry me home" and "Beast and the harlot" My left hand haven't really recovered the speed since my last session 2 days ago. I should get some more done on my GH program today or tomorrow, now I have my dishes to take care of...

demons breath:
Don't compare the actual game to playing midi/samples on a PC. Guitar Hero is a rhythm game like DDR but instead of dancing to music you play notes and if you hit the notes you can hear the guitar track if you miss you don't and silly guitar sounds are heard instead.

As for comparing using a GH controller connected to a PC to playing a real guitar that's a long long away from the same thing. It's just for fun and not to be taken serious. If you wanted something serious you would have to build a digital guitar with more input possibilities.

yeah i know it's not supposed to compete with a real guitar. I can't remember why I took offence at it. Well, I know really... It's because I'm giving up smoking yet again, and it always puts me in a #@*?# mood.

Is laid to rest the one that starts:

D --------------------------------------------------
A --------------------------------------------------
F --------------------------------------------------
C -------------------3------------------------------
G -------6-5-3---------5-6--------------------------
C -0-0-0-------0-0-0-------0-0-0-8-7-5-7-8-7-10-8-7-

or something like that

I haven't listened to Lamb Of God in a while actually

EDIT: OK that didn't come out quite right, but you know what I mean. Possibly.
