So today I was going through my Add/Remove programs list, getting rid of the programs that I didn't need. Whilst in the process of removing one of the programs, a dialog popped up asking me if I wanted to remove a dll with it that wasn't registered under any other programs. I clicked yes. Then more of the same dialog kept popping up for more dll's, so I clicked "Yes to All." Immediately after this, I got this wonderfully unfortunate dialog:

Quote: "Files that are required for Windows to run properly have been replaced by unrecognized versions. To maintain system stability, Windows must restore the original versions of these files.

Insert your Windows XP Professional CD-ROM now."

Oops . This actually wouldn't be too much of a problem, except for 2 things: 1) I have no idea where my XP installation cd is, and 2) My dad, who would know where it is, is travelling on business and I can't contact him. Sooo... anyone have suggestions? Right now my computer's obviously still working, so should I just leave it running? Is this even something I should be concerned with? Or is there a risk that it won't work if I restart it? What about running in safe mode or something? If anyone has any suggestions, they'd be much appreciated. Thanks guys!

[edit] erm... well I was going to take a screenshot of the dialog, but for some reason printscrn won't work. I wonder if it has to do with uninstalling a screen capture program... man my computer's falling apart...

[edit2] Before this gets asked, yes, it is a completely legitimate copy of Windows

I'd probably not want to shut down the computer until you find that xp cd

What I would do is find a friend or someone who has a cd you can borrow. It wouldn't cause any issues, because you actually own a legit license and you're not reinstalling windows or anything.

you could try downloading a virtual CD

aren't you allowed to download a torrent version if you own it and then use your code?

First find out which dll is missing, I think if you just click the OK button it will tell you which dll is missing. Then just download the dll and point the dialogue there. Or indeed, borrow the CD.

Didn't "sfc /scannow" had something to do with missing dll's? I forgot, too lazy too google. Sorry.

Yes, you are allowed one backup of most software as far as I know.

If you have the XP CD, use Automated System Recovery if all else fails. This will reinstall all of the windows files to your computer from the CD, so while everything will work, all of your updates and patches will be gone, including SP2 if your disk does not come with it.

Also all of your data files will still be there, including installed programs and whatsit.

That's not as bad as you think you said.

Well good news! I restarted my computer and it still works! My dad actually called back afterwards about the cd, but it looks like I won't be needing it anymore. Thanks all for the input!

Windows keeps a cache of all the DLLs in a sub folder of either Windows, or system32. It's named something pretty much random like $$NTUninstall$KB5972 or something similar. Also, dll-files.com (I think that's the name) has a replacement for ALL of your missing DLLs, I'd go there and download pretty quick. <Make sure everything is of proper version>

EDIT
Looks like you posted while I was typing my post... Sneaky person you.
