Last month I saw Bjork at a music festival in Scotland and she had a new instrument that just sucked the wind out of me. It's called the ReacTable and it's basically a Synthesiser/beatbox/modulator thing with an amazing tabletop interface. I thought I'd post it on here now I know what it is. Probably the most amazing bit of kit I've ever seen.

It's hard to explain the interface, it's best to see it at work.

Wasn't this posted about a while back?

At any rate, sure, it's cool, but what practical uses does it serve in terms of computing compared with the price?

Reminds me of that hype around Microsofts tabletop computer a while back. It looks the same, really. Pretty cool.

Guys, this is *not* a computer. It's *not* an OS. This *isn't* competing or related with Microsoft in any way. It's purely another musical "instrument", much like a drum machine

I would love to see this live.

On a side note, my wife finally gave me the green light to purchase a theremin!

I know. When I said "computing" I meant "The field of computing", referring to the fact that in interactive input device like that is no doubt usable on a computer system.

Why do I see so many talking about it's "purpose"?

That's like me commenting on a game someone made and me saying "Well, it sure looks cool and all, but what does it DO? What's it's PURPOSE? What can I get out of this?!"

The whole "purpose" of a musical instrument is entertainment! Whether you're entertaining yourself or entertaining a group (Can you say "DJ"? ... I knew you could ) or even just take turns trying to make a cool beat with a friend.. Heck, since I mentioned it, me and my friend sometimes just hear something repetative, like background noise and use it as a beat to start whistling and humming something that sounds pretty cool to us.

It's all about fun, and I think it's awesome! I would love to own one, just looking at the vibration chords between the units is cool, lol.

its not really a new instrument, more like a new take on an input device. I still want one tho.

A cooler instrument is Matt Bellamy's (of Muse) electric guitar with a chaos pad built into the bottom. I want one of those too.

I don't have a sig, live with it.

Reactable is an electro-acoustic instrument

Reactable a experiment made by some people from Barcelona´s university, in fact its not only a "musical experiment", its also a "Social Experiment" since the Reactable its made for "multiuser usage", and its supposed to give us a new view of how music should be played.

Its not only a instrument also it is a sequencer, you can put some of those cubes, each cube has a tune or a pure tone, then you ad other cubes that work like tools for timing, panning, delay, chorus...

Which doesn't in any way mean that it doesn't bear resemblance to Microsoft Surface, as they call it nowadays.

Aye, the big thing about this ISN'T the sounds it's making, it's the user interface. I've never seen such a fluid flexible input method for electronic music. You can make these sounds with a laptop and the right software if you WANT to. But, to be able to influence the music like that live and control so much in such an analogue, quick and fast way is truly inspired.

You can control the intensity, wetness and order of your modulation, your rhythms, tempos and pitches, echoes/delays, live sampling and processing etc.

The only thing I haven't yet seen that I'd want is sample/delay/looping controls in the style of certain guitar pedals and echoplexes.

For Fathers and Sons who enjoy wholy spirits.
