I am really interested in making my own fps games but I am not sure where to start. Is there any good literature on the web about the entire game making process? What are some of the tools used today to make video games? Thank you for your help.

I would also reccommend FPS Creator even though I don't own it but I have used the demo. BUT if you have a DX10 card then wait for FPS Creator X10.
