Hey, I wanna start making Halo 3 montages
Could someone explain how a capture card would work, and if they have any recommendations on what kind to get?
Thanks

Yes, you need a TV-in card, if you want to use HDTV one with HDTV support (if that even exists). You connect the XBOX360 (directly or through the TV) to the TV-in card which you've built into your PC, and the software allows you to record it.

I had a GameBridge a while ago, and you'd plug a console into that and it would play on your PC screen and you could use something like Fraps to record it, but since it used USB to connect to the PC, the framerate was pretty terrible. Would I have the same issue If I have it hooked up though 360 - Card - TV, or can I run HDMI into my TV and still use analog/component from the 360 to the card (Not sure if one cancels out the other).
Thanks

Don't get anything less than a hauppauge video in card. They are by far the best quality you can get.

My hauppauge allows me to get signal in via svideo and rca sound jacks, or via standard uhf video cable. I can also get digital cable input.

You can buy their cards right from their website:

http://www.hauppauge.com/

Of course, if you're only gonna use it for youtube, quality isn't as important, you can get away with a more generic brand of input card. If you won't be using it for anything else, you might as well go with a usb device for convenience.

I have the following card which is fantastic:

Thanks fr the advice
I'm still wondering, are there any cards that allow analog/component directly into the card? That way I run HDMI from the 360 to the TV while also running analog/component from the 360 to the TV In card.

EDIT: How does this look? It actually has composite L/R audio inputs, which was hard to find

Thanks!

My experience with hauppauge is not brilliant. I found the recording terrible (320x160) and there was a constant high pitch drone in the background. I also found it fiddly to fine tune the signal once you'd found the basic signal

The best card I've used is one by Freecom. Not only does the pre-supplied software record much higher quality (720x576), it doesn't have a strange sound in the background, and there was no fine tuning at all. Once it found a signal, it further tuned it automatically and has always got a perfect signal

Edit: Forgot to mention, it's a USB 2.0 interface, so if I really wanted to, I could just move it at a moments notice, and there's no seperate line in cables needed... All done in a single USB 2.0 connection.

Hauppauge has been nothing but trouble with me, though I had one of the earlier generation cards - I can only hope they've improved since.

The bundled software sucked, and there was no support for 3rd party programs really - that excludes Media Center from the picture as no BDA compatible drivers. The updated I got from the hauppage site, I discovered to not be compatible with my card - even though it was under the correct model number. I ended up having to contact technical support, who told me that my card might have been a separate batch with the same product key, and eventually had to battle my way through their FTP site to find compatible drivers - was very much a case of trial and error.

I've got two digital cards at the moment and I'm very pleased with them. One PCI, the other PCI-E, but I can't tell you the names of them other than the chipset they posess: Phillips SAA7162.

Hope that's somewhat helpful.
