I remember reading this on another forum, and I'm sure quite a few people here have seen it too. It was such a laugh reading it again I decided to put the link here.

http://www.adequacy.org/public/stories/2001.12.2.42056.2147.html

I'm pretty sure it was a joke but if it wasn't...the guy who wrote it must have serious mental issues.

I think it starts to become clear from point 6 onwards.

True, chances are it was a joke, but for a computer illiterate it could be misleading. As you said it becomes obvious at 6 for most people, especially gamers.

For me from #2. A weird father might just think so about the ISP's, but claiming Comet Cursor is a hacking tool... And Bonzi Buddy... And Flash...

Yeah, #1 was quite suspicious, but #2 just confirmed it by going over the top with Bonzi Buddy.

Quote: "If your son has requested a new "processor" from a company called "AMD", this is genuine cause for alarm. AMD is a third-world based company who make inferior, "knock-off" copies of American processor chips. They use child labor extensively in their third world sweatshops, and they deliberately disable the security features that American processor makers, such as Intel, use to prevent hacking. AMD chips are never sold in stores, and you will most likely be told that you have to order them from internet sites. Do not buy this chip!"

WHAT! AMD are cool. They have cheap processors. How dare that man say that AMD suck!

EDIT
I read another bit of stupid advice
Quote: "If your son spends more than thirty minutes each day on the computer, he may be using it to DOS other peoples sites. DOSing involves gaining access to the "command prompt" on other people's machines, and using it to tie up vital internet services. This can take up to eight hours. If your son is doing this, he is breaking the law, and you should stop him immediately. The safest policy is to limit your children's access to the computer to a maximum of forty-five minutes each day"

45 MINUTES. That is just stupid!

This is actually obvious from word 6: "Hacker". Hackers help make software, crackers break it.

That is a true fact however somehow people got the idea that programmers who make harmless hacks to make programs/functions better are malicious.

Here is a quote I found that is quite interesting:

Quote: "Hacker: When used properly, this term refers to an elite breed of "good guys" who are talented computer programmers. They enjoy solving challenging problems or exploring the capabilities of computers. Like a carpenter wielding an axe to make furniture, the hacker does good things with his skills. True hackers subscribe to a code of ethics and look down upon the illegal and immoral activity of crackers (defined below). When the press uses "hackers" to describe virus authors or computer criminals who commit theft or vandalism, it is not only incorrect but also insulting to true hackers.

Cracker: Crackers are often mistakenly called "hackers". Crackers are the "bad guys" who seek to "crack" or gain unauthorized access to computers, typically to do malicious things e.g. to steal credit card information or crash the computer. Crackers might do this by writing a virus, worm, or Trojan horse. Alternatively, they may just exploit weaknesses in the computer's operating system in order to gain entry. Many crackers will install a "backdoor" which allows the cracker to "remote control" your computer over the internet, such as to distribute child porn or perform a denial of service attack against somebody else. Most crackers are just bored, anti-social kids who aren't particularly smart and just take advantage of well-known, existing exploits or the gullibility of the typical internet user."

I found it amusing because I get that it's a joke, but I don't find it amusing because there are alot of people who, coming across it, would take it as serious.

Has anyone read the comments going with it? Most of the people there don't seem to get it's a joke. Also the flaming...

http://www.adequacy.org/public/stories/hacker.comments.page.10.html#7911

It is almost disturbing how seriously people take things.
