OK I know I was considering getting an Xbox 360, but I've changed my mind. My friends offering me a 2.8GHz P4, 512MB RAM, Radeon 9600XT 128MB VRAM, 120GB HDD, DVD Burner and a 17" CRT monitor for AUS$100. Not bad really! But I know that while it will last longer then my integrated GPU on my laptop I would need to upgrade. But I don't have the money to do it all at once!

So I was wondering if there was a Motherboard that supported the P4 775 socket (I think that's it) and also the Core Duo 2 sockets. And if it had PCI Express as well as AGP. Maybe I'm asking to much?.

Also I have a question that I've been burning to ask. Does DX10 Support DX9?
Thanks!

I believe all core 2 duo and quad cpus use the LGA 775 socket.

There are loads of motherboads with that socket. Look mainly for motherboards with P35 chipset or nForce 680i chipset.

Newer core 2 duo and the imminent new quad core cpus need a motherboard supporting 1333 FSB. Older core 2 duo and quad core only need a motherboard with 1066 FSB.

I don't think there are ANY boards that have AGP AND PCI Express. It's one or the other. AGP is too old now and no new boards use it. It is too slow for any new cards, specially DX10 ones. You should find any new motherboard will have at least one PCI Express slot.

I don't have Vista which is required for DX10, but I believe you can install DX9 aswell to support older games. XP only goes up to DX9.0c at present. You can use DX10 cards with XP but will not be able to use there advanced graphical features.

So I can purchase a new motherboard, and GPU and use my old P4 CPU while I save for a Core Duo 2?
Or won't the P4 support the 1066 FSB?
If it does that would be great!

My PC's older/slower than that... And I don't need to upgrade yet. But then again, I don't play any of the 'new' games which favor chewing up system resources in place of any kind of story line or game-play

There are loads of different models of P4's, all with different FSB speeds, so yours could be 400, 533, 800, etc. some motherboards that go up to 1333 may not support the lower spec P4's.

Manufactures sites of motherbaords like Asus, Gigabyte, MSI, etc, have detailed specs on what cpus each board supports.

If you want detailed info on your CPU, like what model, core speed, bus speed, etc, then download and run a great little freeware app;
