When you go you can earn high school or university credits.

Im not sure i want to go though, because im not going to know anyone over there and I dont think you are allowed to take anyone with you. I guess it wouldnt be that bad, so Should i go?

That's a joke right? Used to spend my lunch money on beer and cider when I was 16...

And yeah, why not. Get to see some of the world for nothing. Who cares about not knowing anyone. It's an experience you may never get again. Plus, with my England/Wales school experience, then you will practically be a rockstar being American. Depending on the school of course (London being the obvious example where you are just one of a million races). I'm assuming you are American ("On my Computer"). Then again there isn't many other places that would be that excited about going around Europe.

And Wales dude. C'mon now, share the love to us sheep boys More importantly though you are allowed to drink in a pub at 18. Most people can get away with it at 16...

I was actually born in Cambridge (Ely to be exact). But all my family are Welsh (apart from my sister) and I mostly grew up in Anglesey. My Dad was in the RAF so lived all over the place. Until Anglesey. Which sucks as a kid. Although we did that family castle thing as a kid. You know pay something like £50 a year and you can get in any castle for nout. Not bad.

Oh, and my family all moved to Cyprus a couple of years ago. I lived right next to Ascot and decided I wanted to move too. Stress of work and not living anywhere near family as they got older and all that. Plus being a full time programmer for over a decade, mixed with great house price increases, meant I could do it. So now I live in Cyprus. Plus I contract for the same company in the UK. Which seriously rules because I work 4 days a week and get about the same salary (minus car allowance) after tax (better tax here). And salary here sucks. Nice.

Cheers

Isn't that a type of cheese, so a castle made of Cheese...what? Is there a lot of Irish people in Wales or something?

Quote: "I was actually born in Cambridge (Ely to be exact)."

Really? I applied for college there (never got a bloody reply and ended up staying at school 6th form) and my old German teacher lives there...interesting...

As for your trip, what I wouldn't give for such an opportunity, you maybe young, but they take care of you right? (I mean I don't see it being you're out completely on your own, it would be crazy) I mean you'd get to see some great places and like you said you earn credits, if you don't know anyone, you might find it as an opportunity to meet new people and new friends in different countries. Personally I'd think it's an experience you might not get back so easily, I mean I've only ever been to England, Wales and Germany - each of which I've lived (except the week I was in Germany 2 months ago).

I'm sure this sort of thing is a scary thing and may have you homesick, but if you're looked after and are safe then the experience would be good, if for some strange reason you're having to look after yourself completely, then I suppose it would be different.

Now I am not telling you to go, it's just I would, it's the sort of thing I'd do and I'd love the opportunity for, plus I am old enough to look after myself and have been for the last two weeks. I don't know at all how this scheme works, after all I live in England and I've never heard of such a thing here - just remember, most of the time we Europeans are friendly, most of us don't bite, just don't trust the sort of people you wouldn't trust in America.

ONE THING I would STRONGLY suggest is that you know as much as you can possibly know about this trip thing, simply because you may find something you don't like or something you don't expect. I mean our advice can go so far, because some of us here like to travel and get away from family life and comfort zones.

Well good luck and hope our input helps you come to your best decision.

Don't worry, that just means you can only get served in offies.

Also, i'd definately go, its a chance to do something you might not get to do till well after uni.

@Seppuku: Welsh is completely different compared to English. So in England there might be a cheese called Caerphilly, I never even seen the Caerphilly cheese.

if it's a free trip overseas (or even to another country), you'd be a fool not to take it!
I've personally gone on 3 not-so-free overseas trips, and although they were in different conditions than yours, let me assure you, you won't regret it.

As for not knowing anyone, that can turn out fine as long as you go at it with the right attitude. Think of it as an opportunity to gain some new friends. (Really most people are worth getting to know, and maybe you'll miss out if you don't go).

cheers.

When I was growing up, I went to England a number of times because all my Mum's family live there. In the process, we stopped off at America, and did the Scotland/England tour thing. It was fun.

Now that I've done it, and that I'm 20, I want to do a proper trip around all of Europe with some mates. But not for a couple years since I have to finish Uni, then save up!

Having said that, I've also done trips around Australia, and that's just as exotic (I'm Australian) seeing a whole bunch of places that are right in my back yard.

If it's free, jump at the chance!
You'll get put up with some good families, and they can show you whats-what, then you can go out and do your own touristy thing

I think you'll find I was making a joke. Though I think it is a cheese, and well as they're usually named after places, no doubt it is a Welsh cheeses if it really is one...Also...I wonder is Cheddar Gorge is made out of cheese too....

Well we have our good places and our bad places like America, some respects I think England is better, but it all boils down to where you want to live and what you like. As for government, ours isn't that much better, though we do have free healthcare to be thankful of (which at the moment isn't very well funded). Personally I am thinking of moving away from England, but I don't know yet.

Yeah, but there's Australians in Australia isn't there? You know what they're like with their 'alright mate' and their 'barbies' it's just sickening...

I might consider it, but of course I'll need to consider my career first, which may mean staying in England until I'm rich or retired. (As the major book and Magazine publishing companies are in England)

Just become a little bit irreplaceable after a few years so you can basically blackmail them. And make sure the companies IT infastructure is good enough to support the VPNs and communications you will probably have to use. Although if you are into writing then that is even easier to work from home than programming.

Here's what you do, go on a flight to Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. You will be within 75km from water. Run to the nearest coast, swim along the coastline into Denmark then ... I forgot. But, yeah, you should go on the trip(if it's free!).

Not full, but most places have them, like England, Switzerland, Holland, Belguim, Norway, Australia, Canada...and the list goes on.

Just be careful of what you say, a number of people on the forums are American, and well I'm sure there are a number of decent Americans and nice places to go in America, but I only have TV and the internet to guess what America is like, so I'm sure it's not all Frat boys kicking the crap out of nerds.

But I think Germany would be a nice place to live, having lived there myself as a young kid and going there 2 months ago, I found a lot of friendly people there and a lot of crazy people. But Germany isn't the only place - if you avoid the crap places in England you get a fair few decent people, I mean I'm living at Derby at the moment (during term time) and everyone is much nicer and happier than people in the town I was living at in Cambridgeshire.

Besides, I'm thinking of moving to Germany or Norway, Canada, Australia, Japan or Sweden - as I've said numerous times before

@ Maindric
Well I have lived in both Germany and the U.S. and all I can is that I am a tad offended. Well you are ignorant and snotty yourself. You say that America is full of mean and greedy people and I say that, that is bull. In Germany some people were nice and some were not. You cannot escape those type of people because they live all over the world. More likely or not you just said that to sound more funny and give in into that dumb stereotype that all Americans are fat and yada yada. Act more maturely.

@ Seppuku Arts
Quote: "so I'm sure it's not all Frat boys kicking the crap out of nerds"

Go around giving people hugs, spread the love and maybe you'll make friends, or get the living crap kicked out of you, the latter will be most common, but hey, no pain no gain right?

Nope? Bad idea? Well if you're not happy living in America because of mean people, find a place with nicer people to live in - one of those big grin 'hobby' communities that we see in those 'all is good' sitcoms that portray the unrealistic lives of families.
