I think it was a rhetorical question

I don't agree with some of them, particularly the one about the sequel to Mario RPG. Wasn't Paper Mario for the N64 a true sequel to Mario RPG? I could be wrong. And how could Nintendo not have the rights to do a Mario sequel?

Square Enix made the original one, and probably was only loosely based on the Nintendo characters... I never played it, that's just a guess... But if you say that the names are made up at random, and so are the characters, and anything else is just a coincidence, then the law can't do anything about it... Kind of like how South Park starts off each episode then makes fun of Paris Hilton and the like. From my understanding anyways.

What I'm saying is Mario is Nintendo IP. If anything, Square has to get permission from Nintendo to make a sequel, not the other way around.

Yeah, I know what you're saying. The law is not just if you know how to work your way around it. For example, if the name "Jeku" was copyright, I could use it, and if anyone asks about it I would just say "It's purely coincidence that my name is the same as that Jeku, as well as my avatar." This of course wouldn't work with credit card fraud and identity theft, but you get my point.

I'm not saying that's what happened, or that that would actually work, just stating it. Also, perhaps Square Enix had copyright to the Mario RPG series, but got permission from Nintendo to use mario, and hence Nintendo could not use the Mario RPG name.

Its just Square Enix owns the game Super Mario RPG and to get the rights for an OFFICIAL sequel (Paper Mario was unofficial) they'd have to get it from square enix.

I still don't believe it. Any source? That's like saying Bioware owned the Star Wars KOTOR license. No, they just made the game. The publisher still owns the rights. Nintendo would *never* sell off the rights to one of its own IP.

Okay, Super Mario RPG was a taken name by Square Enix. You can make a game called Super Mario the Freaking Amazing, and have someone in it who doesn't even relate to Nintendo's Mario. Nintendo wouldn't be able to take that name as it is IP to you. (Technically me now )

Just my thoughts though.

Quote: "Officially, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars does not have a direct sequel, especially in terms of a sequel based on the original game's plot. However, two successive RPG-themed Mario series, the Paper Mario series and the Mario & Luigi series, are considered to be its "spiritual" and thematic successors. In fact, Nintendo originally titled Paper Mario as Super Mario RPG 2.[23] However, because of Square's involvement in the original game, direct sequels were not legally possible without Square's permission or involvement, so Nintendo changed the title to Paper Mario[24], although the development of the game mechanic itself went for the most part unaltered.

Some of the game's team members, including some from Square, went on to work on the Mario & Luigi series. These developers include the two directors Yoshihiko Maekawa and Chihiro Fujioka, as well as music composer Yoko Shimomura. However, they provided different styles and mechanics than those of Super Mario RPG. Geno's doll form was featured in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga.[25]"

Wow, according to Wikipedia you're right. I just can't fathom Nintendo having to ask a 3rd party for permission to make a Mario title. Sometimes lawyers move in mysterious ways Thanks for the trivia!

I want to make a Super Mario Bros Global, which is Co-op Mario, but I can't, mostly because I don't do internet programming.

Mario Game Maker was to be for SNES.
But man that would have been cool!

Man, I'd love to make a super mario bros game sequel, using a similar game engine.

heh heh, I would be Mario, and everyone else would be the lowly goombas... lol, jk. The idea is that you'd create your own characters, and be able to interact with Mario, Bowser, etc, all the main characters. You'd complete quests for Mario (Generally good will quests), do simple tasks for Luigi (Ex, get mario a sandwhich from desert land), find people for Peach (Ex, find Toad), do evil missions for Bowser (Ex, go recruit a few goombas and such). Of course you would also be able to interact with other players and the such. That's just what I want to do though.

I'm shocked! I've never heard the words Realm Crafter, and programming in the same sentence before! lol.

I'll tell you what though, if you want to, we could team up and make a Mario MMORPG. Or if you ever think about it, just send me an email and I'll help ya out. Or if I think about starting on it, I'll send ya an email and ask if you want to work on it to. How's that sound?
