to be a "designer" do you have to know a anything like C++ ect DX OpenGL. I know there are things like unreal editor ect, are there jobs that just work with creativity maybe some scripting and mainly level design?

Here's what I know, but it differs from company to company.

A game designer does not have to know any kind of programming skills, but scripting skills (Lua, etc.) are an asset and will get you more opportunity.

Also, you would be good to have some level design theory but not necessarily a pro at Maya or 3DS Max.

Most of the producers/game designers I know don't have a computer degree and many of them worked their way up from QA.

Well, i'm not sure about everywhere. However that said, where I am going to school, they are trying to teach us a little bit of everything so if we eventually make it up to game designer,so then we can better communicate with the team and their is no miscommunication.
