ive been programing on and off with dark basic classic for a couple of years and i think im good enough to have a go at a proper game. trouble is, i dont know what genre to write it in. racing, rts ect.

what do people think?

Don't think anyone can make this decision for you, what is your personal favourite genre? It's wise to choose the one you like so you'll have more fun making it, although I wouldn't recommend it if your favourite genre is something like MMORPG

it depends how much time you are willing to spend. If you have been on and off programming then I presume you get board pretty easily. I recomend you make a simple game such as a racing or FPS (despite what everyone says I think FPS's are the coolest). RPG's can take a long time to get a decent game and an RTS engine can be hard to program (let alone the enemy AI). Games containing spaceships or vehicles are quite good because they are easy to model, asuming you have a 3D modeling program. Start with a simple game and then start upgrading it.

Create exactly what you want. Or mix genres.
