I know, worthless and pointless post. But I'm pretty much confined to a chair for the weekend.

Wow.... that is seriously scary. Don't defragment that, go out and get yourself Diskeeper Lite. It's free, and it defragments quicker, more efficiently and has a nicer interface with more features overall. The Windows one is alright, but it'll take you a looooong time, and even then, it won't defrag as well.

Just bought that yesterday.

I have Norton tools, all it did when I clicked defrag from its menu was open windows defrag, which usually doesn't do a very good job even after 5 defrags.

Thanks Veron, I've been looking for a better defrag utility.

Friend of mine installed a fresh copy of Vista on a freshly formatted harddrive. After the OS install, the drive was already 20% fragmented. That's just an insane lack of efficiency.

You mean the entire contents on the drive is only 8GB? (that's just Vista alone right there!)

I have over a decade of files and projects collected. My C: drive doesn't really store any of my files, all that space taken up is just from installed software. Your average game these days is 4GB or more. My media drive is for my 250GB of music (legit rips, not downloaded). Things add up.

I like jkDefrag, its free and generally does a better job than windows defrag. Also it comes with a .scr file so you can set it as your screensaver .

That's not as bad as you think you said.

Hmmm, DiskKeeper seems to have replaced the original windows defrag completely. It actually looks like it was an add-on to the default tool.

DiskKeeper was a little faster than Windows, and did a MUCH better job on the first run through.

You may want to try PerfectDisk 8.0 by Raxco software. In principle it's "Smart Placement" method will make everything load faster, but I didn't always find it to be the case

So while you MAY want to try PD, Diskeeper is a pretty good utility. I think somewhere (a while ago) I read that the defragger bundled with Windows 2000 and newer is just a crippled version of Diskeeper

Oh really? I just happen to have a picture of my defrag from about a year ago. I'd like to see someone top this one!

Btw, my Window colors are not set that green shade, it's the gif compression.

You've never seen a flash drive crash? You're lucky, cause I've seen many people toss away their flash drives because they just suddenly failed.

The major reason why it got so bad was because windows defrag refused to work properly for a long time and then I just eventually forgot about it.

XP and Vista it's designed to be run multiple times, so it takes less time to defrag. It also means it can adapt the performance to better than it is with multiple passes.

Vista has an option to let it keep going for X amount of passes, but only from command line.

I was under the impression it does as good a job as it'll ever do on the first pass. I could be mistaken, regardless I'm not that anal about a defrag, the speed gain is negligable.. that said I do defrag every so often, probably about once every 3 months or so.
