Having purchased the Orange Box last night I ended up with 2 free gifts that I could give to someone, or one each to two different people. I'm posting this here to see if anyone is interested...

What I Have
1 free copy of Half-Life 2
1 free copy of Half-Life 2: Episode 1

Why?
I already owned these games, but they are included in the Orange Box deal. Instead of paying $80.00 for the three new games I wanted, as individual purchases, I saved $30.00 by getting the OB, thus ending up with these 2 free gifts that I can give away.

What you need
-A valid Steam account in good standing
-You must not already own a game that you want to receive as a gift, as you cannot re-gift someone else according to Valve.
(Violations/Misrepresentations of either rule above will result in you experiencing "intense bodily pain")

How Will I determine Who Gets What?
I have no idea, so that's why I am posting this here. I'd rather gift 2 people: One person who doesnt have HL2, and another who never got around to ep1, but I realise this scenario might be difficult to find. I guess we can see how it works out.

What If Multiple People Want The Same Gift?
Again, I have no idea how I would choose. Maybe the other forum users that have no stake in this could weigh-in and help come up with ideas of how to sort it out. Maybe a good sob story, or a small contest, pick a random number? I have no idea

Well, thats all - if you want a free copy of HL2 and/or HL2:EP1 you can post here (minding the rules above ).

Please don't post email addresses or Steam ID's here, we'll sort that out via private email once the receipients of the gifts are determined.

The best way would be to make a list, randomly choose two people, and they get them. Or, a contest. Not sure on what you'd be contesting. Otherwise, you could get a lot of people complaining and trying to convince you they *need* them the most. I know I wouldn't want to just choose, maybe you do.

I'll think of some contest ideas, if you want.

I would accept HL2:EP 1 with a huge thank you and hugs and kisses, but if I installed steam on this laptop it would explode and well my decent computer is back at home (which I won't be there until December)

But I'm sure somebody else will want EP 1.

I have Ep 1 (bought from Steam) but not the original one. If your attribution decision heuristic values stocky, male, Portuguese geeks then I guess I'm eligible.

I don't have EP 1 and would thank you tremendously if you gave it to me.

I've played through HL1, HL Blue Shift, HL Opposing Force, and HL2, but never got EP 1.

If you gave it to me, i would like to do something in return, but being terrible at coding, modeling, texturing and just about everything else, this could be a slight problem.

I'll agree with your opinion, on this forum, no matter how silly, for an entire year, if you give it to me. Haha.

What I think should be done is everyone make a personal video (uploaded to YouTube) explaining a bit about why you should deserve to get a free game.

I've played HalfLife2 but still haven't got episode 1 so I'd like that. I wouldn't do a video because I don't have a camera though... Maybe you should have some sort of competition for them?

And if you upload a video, you should have to show some kind of talent, like juggling or solving a rubik's cube.

Yeah, why not count me in for a little bit of fun, I don't have HL2 or Episode 1.

As for the video idea... I might just make one.

I'm all for this video idea, I don't have a camera though, just a mobile phone, so does anyone know of a converter?

Not that I'd do it to get a free game, I'd just do it for the hell of doing something strange.

Still got to get Orange Box, been playing Portal whenever it gets quiet at work from one of my colleges accounts; but would love to play Episode 1 & 2

atm I've been entertaining myself each time I want to replay Half-Life 2 by playing Metastasis or Causality. For those who haven't played them, best damn HL2 mods out there imo

Need to actually add friends to my steam list now their new system apparently actually works >_<

They've probably not got all the bugs out of the system yet.

Quote: "stay on topic please"

It's about Steam, so isn't that on-topic?
Sides think it's actually kinda cool to know how the friend/steamid system work and doesn't.. otherwise when you decide who you want to give the gift too you won't have to try a number of times for it to go through.

Although yeah, if ya wanna send me EP1 that'd be cool

Which is a point, I have an extra Half-Life 2 key that is just going to waste. Bought it online on release day, and someone else got me the DVD about 2 years back. Already offered it to mates, but the only one who doesn't have HL2 said he didn't want the key so meh heh

I can't juggle but I can solve a rubik's cube

I still think he should hold some sort of competition however.

I wanted to end this today so the winners could have the games for the weekend, but if it becomes some sort of compo (i like the video compo idea from Jess T) then this would have to be stretched out for a few days at least.

What does everyone think, should it become a video compo?

I don't know, it'd be nice to have to do something over video, but not everyone has access to a video recorder/camcorder/mobile phone. I can use my phone, but overall, yeah, it'd be good to do, better than a random pluck-out-of-the-hat.

Agent Dink sent me his extra copy as a gift, so I'm good.
Completed it now, pretty cool overall; but wasn't so jazzed by the whole odd difficulty curve.

Certainly had more promise than HL2 itself, now it's REALLY made me want Episode 2 though. I'm in the mood to work on some SP levels for the game now though. Awesome fun blitzing through these games.

OK, the entry period for the random drawing is now closed. The *cough* scientific process *cough* of determining the winners will now begin.

here kitty kitty kitty....

I'll post a new thread once the winners have been, um, "determined".
