Yes, I know, haven't been on the forums since July. How's everyone been?

Anyway, I recently had my drive re-formatted to clean up some cluster congestion problems. I've re-downloaded tracks from iTunes and Rhapsody before, it's usually no problem.

So, I downloaded the .exe for both Rhapsody and iTunes and installed them. Rhapsody worked out great, literally, I cliked a button, end of story. iTunes on the other hand was quite an annoyance.

I "checked for purchases" and was greeted by the popular "Everythings's already there" screen. I was puzzled at first, my drive was re-formatted. So I called their very un-professional tech support, and was asked to use their website instead of tech support. So, I e-mailed their website. And was told to call tech support. I called tech support, and again was asked to e-mail them. I checked my "Purchase History" and all my purchases were there.

I told the tech support person (a robot, not even a human), who told me I had to re-authorize my computer. So, I re-authorized my computer, which simply made things worse. When I e-mailed their automated tech support, they re-directed me to their site FAQ, which told me to do everything that had already been done. And, yes, I checked my directory, it's abandoned.

All of this for low-quality, locked files that I can't actually get back after I purchased them. Oh wait! The online tech support person tells me I have to re-purchase that $180 worth of songs! And, I have to pay an extra $0.30 for the higher-quality songs. Rhapsody doesn't have different levels of quality, all their songs are 192 Kbps and $0.89. 192 Kbps for $1.29 on iTunes. Not to mention Rhapsody gave me a $10 refund after my first re-format (Unlike iTunes, Rhapsody has actual humans that answer your calls).

I don't mean to bust iTunes too bad, it's just their system is completely un-professional.

Next time, I think I'll get my music from Rhapsody for $0.40 less and same quality (those $0.99 songs are 128 Kbps).

Is there anyone who can help me get my music back without having to pay $180?

Thanks.

Good to see you back Nerd. Ouch. $180? That's crazy, they should give you your songs + $10 more for the trouble.

Neither are you Specters...

That C++ Nerd,
I've always (since I found out about it) steered clear of any locked file formats.
If something has DRM on it, I'd better be able to crack it to get my raw file, or you're not getting my money, simple as that

I personally much prefer getting music on CD because for maybe £2/$4 more because you can rip the music to your computer without DRM and you get the best quality possible. But anyway that sucks. Unlucky 'That C++ Nerd'

DO NOT BUY DRM PROTECTED MUSIC EVER!!!!!!. mp3 is a useless format anyway, cassete tapes sound better. buy cd's, you can rip it as many times as you want

learn blender, you will never regret it.

Hessiess, you're being a bit stupid there, MP3s don't have DRM, and they can be quite high quality

Though Hess has a point about buying CD's only, I refuse to buy and download music, I know if I go to the shop and buy them, I know for sure that what I get is mine - I can put my music on the computer and back it all up (incase a CD is lost)

But ouch there, unfortunately that's the risk of using a program to buy music down through the internet and hope it gets sorted.

iTunes doesn't suck, your problems are all related to the iTunes store.

Only time I bought albums as a download was for a Vast album because they offered no physical CD for it.

@C++ Nerd,
since your account still shows your music as purchased, then by right I believe you should be able to go download that music elsewhere, such as limewire or other P2P software. RIAA can't sue you for downloading what you've already paid once.....can they?

I did that-Downloaded 500 miles song from 3 mobile and downloaded it off limewire. The artist still gets enough money!

Someone is deaf.

my hearing is perfect, thank you very much.
your hearing must be defective if you think mp3's sound like anything but crap.

mp3 destroys the high notes, witch completely ruins the music.

good quality cassette players sound almost as good as cd's, at least until the tape gets stretched

and as soon as you digitise something, you discard data, then if you use lossy compression, even more data is discarded, and it cannot be recover, technically vinal has the best sound quality. but it recwires ridiculously expensive equipment to reproduce the sound well

If you can tell the difference between a good quality MP3 and a CD, the music you are listening to is boring you to death and you've spent too much on speakers. Sorry.

Since the other one was scaring you guys so much...

If you can't tell the different, I think the music you are listening to is boring (or rather, uninteresting)

Nothing like hearing Vito Covalucci on a good set of speakers.

Depends on the rate they are encoded at

Quote: "and as soon as you digitise something, you discard data"

Um, that is not always true. If the audio is uncompressed you don't lose anything. Guess what--- all music is digitally made nowadays

Sure, MP3 encoding can sound bad... if you compress it too much. Whenever I rip my music I just rip it at a near lossless rate. I can never tell the difference. Just drag the slider up to a lower compression level if you aren't satisfied ^_^

I usually encode at 256 simply to keep size down, except for instrumental music, which I encode at 320.

I had a similar issue. My newest issue is not "autorizing" my computer. I've authorized my SAME machine too many times. I reinstall Windows a LOT, so I need to reauthorize and can't. Since I already paid for the music, I imagined grabbing it from LimeWire would be ok, so that's what I did. If anyone knows whether it is still illegal, please tell me. Thanks

You paid for it, you have a right to a copy.

As for me, I have no proof for a lot of my music as most of my CDs were stolen from my car last summer. So now all I got are digital copies.
