...up and running. Very nice it is too. Certainly noticed a vast speed increase when using the internet over my old USB ADSL line + ICS.

Its a Netgear job by the way...

you still using USB ASDL modems, cause they suck alot of power from the system from the PSU & CPU - dunno why but most USB periphirals like that are kinda wasteful.

but a gateway router is cool

Got my netgear DG824M ADSL wireless gateway/ADSL modem thing a couple of months ago and am very happy with it.

Can share ADSL connection with all my flatmates without running cables through the whole house and use phone at the same time and be protected by firewall built in to router.

These wireless adaptors are amazing. I can even sit in garden and browse the net at a ridiculous speeed.

How did I manage to use a dial-up connection for so many years!

Yep. Got a Linksys one to me cable modem. Nice built in firewall, and a few computers connected to it. Tis nice. And the wireless thing is seriously cool (I'm lying down in bed here, with 0 wires ).

Heh, I did the browsing the internet at ridiculous speeds while sitting in the sunshine the other day too. Unfortuantly I never actually realised that laptop screens are crap in glaring sunshine. Drats.

Cheers

I am 99% probably lying in bed right now... so don't blame me for crappy typing

The only problem with it is that the time wont set. Its supposed to use various time servers, but it wont. I know the one at Nildram doesn't work - at least not according to Time's auto-update feature.
So, I need to know what service is required (NTP isn't present in the list), an IP address and port number.

MrTAToad: Which netgear router have you got? When I first got mine the NTP did not work either, plus it disconnected from BT Broadband evey 10 mins. Netgear produced various firmware upgrades and now everything works. Suggest you got to netgear support site and see if there is updated for router as one currently shipping is very old.

MrTAToad: Have you solved your netgear problem yet? My guess is you have an 814 and the NTP fix was uploaded to netgear's site yesterday.

Good luck.

Its a DG814 with the latest firmware update. Mind you, if a new one came out yesterday, I'll have to do it again...

For the speed test (during a heavy download), I get 359142.03 bps. I'll also try again when the network isn't so busy.

Not bad speed there...

These routers are great - its a shame I wasted £40 on an internal ADSL modem a few months ago, when I should have got this. Ah well...

462069Mbps? are you sure thats right, as a motherboard isn't even capable of that - if it were kb then that'd be a 512 ADSL line else you've got one bloody good connection there. lol

Its Bps actually.

The firmware upgrade still hasn't set the Gateway time - still at Sunday 0, Saturday 0. I wonder if its because whilst the DHCP is active, I'm using static IP addresses...

MrTAToad: Check out link below for thread about your router. Someone claims you have to do a factory reset before you upgrade firmware before NTP works.

I'll try that later...

Interesting - it seems the time/date settings will only work if all machines have an IP address controlled by the gateway, which mine aren't.

Actually it seems that is slightly incorrect (possibly needed a gateway reset). However, the time is 15 minutes slow, and the date still isn't set.

It does seem that DHCP controlled IP address are the only way to get the time & date working correctly. I've e-mailed Netgear about it, but from what I've heard, they're not likely to reply.
