Andrey: You have heard correct, you can feed it dlls. It is generally unwise to replace the DirectX ones though as Wine's own dlls are what map the DirectX calls onto OpenGL and overriding these normally ends up with less functionality rather than more.
Also yes you are right it almost certainly would run better on Nvidia cards.

Jess T: JESUS CHRIST! thats heavy!

All: I've got Uni coding to do and L-System research but I may have some time later today to put up a test file. Please bear with me, got alot on!

Well I tried this out for myself, but all I get is "Failed to validate compiler." Using 7.10 64-bit Ubuntu.

Andrey: You will need these in your system32 folder
http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?d3dx9_30
http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?d3dx9_28
http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?d3dx9_31
http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?mfc42
DO NOT overwrite them in they are there, it could cause more problems.
The last one is required before the compiler will even work.
Also ensure you are running the latest update and that you use CodeSurge are your IDE (the standard one runs very badly in Linux)

After that, you will need to validate your copy of DBP, which I have, as yet been unsuccessful at, other than by copying over the certificates from my windows copy of DBPro...I'm still waiting to find a legit way round that.

After that you are 'technically' finished but there are some other problems that are liable to come up, basically report any errors here!

Good luck

Maybe it's just me, but Ubuntu doesn't have it there. I can't find any dll's except inside programs I installed myself. I'm really confused, and I'm not an Ubuntu pro, which is a bad combo.

Have you checked in ~./wine? There should be a lot of wine-related directories there, although I'm not sure where the Dlls are kept

Yeah, go to your home folder, press control+h to see the hidden folders and go to .wine...in there go to c_drive and you'll see your windows folder...and in there is you system32 folder!

Sorry should have made that clear!

Is that why linux is only 1.5% of the computer market, whilst Windows is 85%?

*ahem* I actually came to this thread <Instead of making a new one> to ask if anyone has successfully been able to install Ubuntu 7.10 on an AMD based computer. To me it seems that nothing, Linux-wise, works on an AMD computer. I get to the part where the kernel loads (During install, test run, etc) and all hell breaks loose. I did choose the desktop/AMD version, however have not been able to get past the kernel loading (It claims a bunch of failures and then brings up the DOS styled command entry).

Cheers,

Well 7.04 is easily installable though Windows just try Wubi.
BTW I have an AMD Athlon 64.
{edit} Almost forgot, you can uninstall with Wubi. It only makes a Virtual Disk with any 7.04 *buntu

Wow, thanks Keo C, that really helped. It's currently installing right now.

Edit
Oh crap, 7.04? Hmm, should have payed attention to version number... Meh, it'll be fine..... Or die a horrible death in black as blood sky! <Ren and Stimpy reference>

I'm glad I helped, I'm using 7.04 right now. I don't see anything wrong with it right now. {edit} I might get a taste of your world Aaron, as I might put a down payment on a Vista laptop.

Crap. Didn't work. I suppose downloading 7.04 might help. The error I got was "Int 14 Error 0x00000000".

As for Vista, I would indeed try it. Vista is really awsome. If there's speed issues, it's probably just because of Aero, you can change to another theme, such as Vista Basic or Windows Classic, both of which are a ton quicker.

D/L Link
Linky
Now let IT D/L the ISO, OR Download the Ubuntu 7.04 alt-32 bit CD ISO.
If it doesn't work I'm sorry XP/Ubuntu over here.
{edit} As for Vista, I won't bash before I use it. Considering the cost of it, if I don't like it I'll resize the partition and opt for Dual-Boot. I just need to recompile my favorite Linux HTML Editor so It will work with Windows.

Actually, I had the Ubuntu ISO on my desktop before hand, and then downloaded Wubi which installed Ubuntu. It said it was downloading Ubuntu, but it was a very short download if it did. I figured it only installed the core components. So I should move the ISO to my "crap" folder I take it and reuse Wubi?

Edit
AMD Athlon 64 3800+

I'm running an NVidia card, and an AMD Sempron 64bit 3300+.
Installed 7.10 fine first time.

It could be a hardware conflict. Have you tried searching for the issues?

Also, I think this is worthy of a new thread (as long as it doesn't turn into a Windows-bashing session, and you actually do research before hand).

Yes, because HE only uses Windows for DB... In my opinion linux isn't ready for the masses, I use it all the time, and yet I still frequently have to ask other people for help because certain things break. The only real thing I see wrong with linux though is usability, it's fast, it's cheap/free (depending on distro) and it's evolving all the time. What linux needs is a company to do an Apple and throw a few graphics/interface designers at it and make it so my grandmother can use it, and then it would be ready for the masses.

Well the D/L Link it uses to me is slooooow.
I would download the 7.04 *buntu ALT ISO of your choice.
{Edit} If you don't know what the Alt-ubuntu disk is look for the words virual disk, that's what Wubi uses, Or if your fine with the D/L time let it do the work.

I'll look for an alt ubuntu, thanks.

@Others
I'm using an ATI based video card, might that be a problem? I'm noticing most people here use an nVidia based GPU.

Well, after three hours of attempted installation of Ubuntu, I have failed to install it.

Steps taken
1 * Started install with

2 * Errors occurred

3 * The installer portion appeared. I chose the US keyboard layout.

4 * Hangs at 0% of "detecting hardware for cd-rom" for around 5 minutes

5 * CD ROM gets scanned for software, supposedly

6 * Installer loads additional components

7 * Detects network hardware Hangs at 0% for several minutes.

8 * After several more minutes after the network prompt goes away Installer configures network with DHCP

9 * Message Occurs:
Quote: "Your network is probably not using the DHCP protocol. Alternatively, the DHCP server may be slow or some network hardware is not working properly."
I chose Do not configure the network at this time.

10 * I entered in the hostname as aaron.

11 * The installer attempts to detect disks. Hangs for several minutes at 0%, then disappears and hangs for several more minutes

12 * Message Occurs:
Quote: "No disk was detected. If you know the name of the driver needed by your disk drive, you can select it from the list."

13 * I went through the following list of options/drivers, each one failing <If one has ' - problem' by the name, go back to 12>

14 * Installer starts up the partitioner

15 * Message Occurred:
Quote: "This is an overview of your currently configured partitions and mount points. Select a partition to modify its settings (file system, mount point, etc), and free space to create partitions or a device to initialise its partition table."
The following options were given:
There was nothing I could do with any of these options other than to "get help" on partitioning and look at messages explaining no partition was selected (Considering there were none to select).

I think that's about it.

Cheers,

-naota

That's just stupid. Next you'll be going off into a rant about how everything has to be open-source, every company who makes closed-source software is evil, grow a beard and call yourself RMS. Linux is about having a usable operating system as an alternative to windows. Also, I'm definitely not a newcomer to linux, and I prefer it, I don't want to spend days just getting my system working (Gentoo), or having to compile stuff from scratch and getting dependancies to just get something working. What exactly is wrong with the fact it comes as a usable package, and you use a package manager to get programs?

This happens mainly with all the Linux distros I try and use. I tried Ubuntu, Kubuntu, I believe Xubuntu, Linspire, Debian, and OpenBSD (I don't think that's a linux, but if it is...). Linspire worked on another computer, but not on this one. They all crash mainly during the install. Kubuntu crashed during the "start/install" part. I don't recall what happened with Xubuntu.

My first actual linux experience was actually Linspire. I hear Suse is good and rather compatible, so I may go out and buy that. What of Xandros?

@Baggers
I've tried with and without Wubi. With Wubi it "gets installed", but when I go to run it <Whilst starting up> I get an "int 14 err 00000000" type thing. It says "hd(0, 2) file system ntfs partition type 0x7" on the loading screen.

Much more choice based. Ubuntu, you load it up, and there's GNOME. Yes you could download KDE or XFCE, but other distros make it so much more customizable. Right now I'm using Enlightenment, which, I'm willing to bet maybe 2 other people have heard of. The whole idea of linux is that you're free to do whatever you want with it, and while, technically this is true in Ubuntu, I feel like the fact that it come pre installed with so much stuff it just makes more sense to download a lighterweight distribution and add on to that as you will.

This is not to say that Ubuntu is bad, it's what got me into Linux, but after trying many other distros, I can understand many of the complaints about it.

Also it doesn't come preinstalled with automake or a C compiler, what's up with that?

[Edit]
Oh yeah, I have nothing against package managers, they're an incredibly useful resource and even more "geeky" distros like Gentoo and Arch have package management.
