Hey. an old xbox has come to my posesion. And i wanna put linux on it but dont know how to start. Ive been googling but only found out about ways i dont think im capable of. I wanna now the cheepist way to do this. Ive heard takign out the mod chip and replacing could let you that sound easy enough but i dont really wanna spend loads of money on this liek i would if i used the method were i need to buy an usb adapter a usb memory stick and MechAssult. I dont know if the xbox is version 1.6 or not. Any suggestions. And if you havent guessed yet its not a 360.

Also Got another idea. What if i take the hard drive out put it in my comp install linux then put it back in. Any one know if this will work.

The only way to install linux onto your xbox is to have a modded xbox, there's no way in hell you're going to remove the hard drive from the xbox, installing linux onto it and expect everything to work. that's just stupid.

It doesnt matter what version your xbox is, it might if youre thinking about a hardware mod, but softmodding is much cheaper and easier. go to http://smdepot.net/ and read the tutorials and see how to mod your xbox..

then download a xbox linux program, and install it by using the tutorial/readme file that comes with it...

No.
Even if the XBox version of linux doesn't need a custom kernel, if you install it on your PCs hardware first, when it tries to run on the XBox, it will find wildly different hardware there, and more than likely fall over.

No, there is a softmod. It's a technical process, you need a memory card and a copy of mech warriors or that old Bond game i can't remember the name of. With those games, you can exploit a vulnerability in the saving-loading process that will enable you to run unsigned code. That would possibly be the cheapest way, but also the most difficult.

if you had read my post, you'd have seen that i pointed out softmodding was posible. Modded doesnt have to be "Mod chip", i think when you talk about modding, you're talking about both..

Okay thanks. Just a question. If i get a mod chip to put in will i then be able to install linux or is tehre mroe to do?. And if so were can i get one?. Also software prepareing. ive looked at mech asult but i dont seem to be bale to get the version i ned any were becous ethey released an update for it. And one no the other game that i cna use?.
