I'm in a bit of bind....

I received a letter in the mail saying I was guaranteed admission to UC Santa Barbara from the Director of Admissions because I'm an ELC student (Meaning I'm in the top 4 percent of my senior class). I was happy but later found out after researching that it is a party school with low class discussions and problems of having people getting a bachelors in six years instead of four for partying purposes.

Should I go there? I haven't been accepted to any other school, but I haven't applied yet because all UC applications open up on November. I'm pretty sure I'd have a full ride because of Navy ROTC, but don't want to be stuck in an environment with a bunch of people who don't want to study and party all day and night.

What is your take on this? There is still the probability I'm accepted elsewhere, but this school does have all majors I'm interested in? Does anyone know anything I don't?

Thanks.

If you can wait to see if you get accepted any where else, perhaps you should wait a little while longer. Otherwise you don't really have a choice, eh?

I won't go there, but think about it, if I apply to, let's say four different schools, that's approx. 240 dollars when that could be going towards room, because NROTC doesn't cover that, it only does tuition and all that other "school" related stuff.

Paying a fee just to send in an application? Man, over here you can apply to all universities for free. Actually there's an authority that handles all the applications (unless the course you're applying for requires more then just grades). And no matter where you attend here there will be people partying all the time and others studying dead seriously (but most are somewhere in between).

Oh, yeah. I have no idea what would be the best option for you. If there's somewhere you would rather go and think you have a chance of getting in I'd say it may be worth the money. Can't you ask your parents to help with the fees?

Thats funny, he started the thread and now he can't ask questions?

Paying $65 for an appilcation form is a rip off, it costs nothing to send one off in the UK.

Right, you want my answer?

I think you should go for place you want, yeah you get a full ride, but think of the environment you'll be in - partiers = late nights with noisy neighbours (Personally, I can't stand when the people upstairs slam doors at 4 am...so, if they were proper partiers, then I'd be screwed for sleep) You'd also be in an un-inspiring environment where you're the only one who wants to work...it would be hard I think. (That if you were me, for goodness sakes, I find it hard to work if my room is messy)

I had to pay UCAS £15 to send my University application. Though $65 is a bit of a rip off, but hey, it's for something worth the money, so the price for sending them off isn't so ugly.

What you talking about Willis? Heheh. 6 years because they party a lot? Grief. I partied a *hell* of a lot, missed most lectures, did *no* revision whatsoever, and graduated a CS degree after the appropriate 3 years (not a sandwich). In hindsight (and at the time really) I wish it had taken 6 years

Cheers

I am also an elc student and I know a bit about UCSB. It is not only a party school. You can go to parties but the school is actually very prestigious for its academic majors. It is an excellent choice. My first choice is UCLA, but we will see what happens.

So is it or not a good school? It has everything I want in majors, Computer Science, Poly Science, and Psychology. My first choice is UCSD, but I don't know if I'm accepted there yet or not. I may end up going to SDSU but I'm still debating. Know anymore about the school Alex?
