ok, i was using my dad's computer and i was waiting for something to load up when i noticed the icon for the computers graphics card in the tray thing (the bit of the taskbar on the far right). so i just looked at the options on there and found one about flipping the screen. i clicked on it and the screen went on it's side. so i clicked on it again and it went back to normal. i clicked on another one which said something about change desktop size/resolution (can't remember which) and the screen goes really strange with lots of stripes moving across the screen really fast. you can't see what you are doing and i can't find the button while it's like that. i think the screen has become skewed and pasted again and again in these stripes. i can only think that the computer does not support that option which i clicked on. The only solution i can possibly think of is taking out the hard drive, putting it into my PC, backing up the important files then reinstalling windows on it. my PC shouldn't be affected because i have a different type of graphics card. my dad's card is an ATI radion and mine is an Nvidia GeForce 2.
does anyone know of an easier way of sorting this out?
thanks for reading though all this and thanks in advance for any answers.

Cool Kid, please don't bother posting if you're not posting something helpful.

blobby, your best bet is to boot into Safe Mode, and see if you can 'restore default settings' or some-such for the video-card software.

Sos Jess T,
Anyway fxgamer's idea sounds good although if its the graphics card that's at fault it proberly won't work. You could put in a different graphics card-If it's AGP I could lend you one Blobby 101

Hold F8 just before the Windows logo appears on startup, and select "Safe mode" from the options that appear (assuming 2K/XP though)

This happened to me a few times before....just work out how to load up the graphics options and revert the screen res back to normal, using short cut keys etc alone. What windows version are you using? Sure someone with the same version of windows can tell you what you need to press...

Your monitor just doesn't support that resolution. Simply load up in safe mode and set the resolution to whatever, it should change it when you reboot. If not, uninstall your graphics driver from safe mode, then when you boot it should reinstall the driver.

You can get to safemode like David R said.
