I figure enough people here play games that use Punkbuster to warrant a thread about this. The other day I encountered a pretty nasty bug. You load up your favorite game and start playing, and a few minutes later, zap, you're booted from the game. Apparently punkbuster's recent updates have trouble with firewall, antivirus, and anti-spyware applications. Apparently the biggest culprits are Windows Firewall, AVG, Trend Micro, and Spybot S&D. When those update certain files, they think a punkbuster program (pnkbstrB.exe) is spyware or malware, and they proceed to ban it from accessing the internet or simply delete the file entirely. Pretty annoying!
If this happens to you, hunt down a program called PBSVC and another called PBSetup. Use PBSVC to uninstall all of the punkbuster elements, then use PBSetup to install PB for all of your games, then use PBSVC again to configure and test Punkbuster. Once you've done that, you're good to go... no need to uninstall and reinstall all of your PB games, as some people have. Thought this was relevant enough to Geek Culture to warrant a thread
