I've been racking my brain lately for a new comic. Having spent the last 7-odd years spawning new stories for my eccentric character called "Robo," (Yes, he's a robot) I finally decided to take my comic making to the next level. A self-publishing site and the need for topical illustrations to accompany my blog ignited a spark in my mind-
chalks.
The idea is very much in it's early stages, but it's basically a comic made completely in the style of chalkboard drawings, with a focus on the mute character known simply as chalks and the world and eccentric characters that he begins to comprehend in his own special way. You might call him a philosopher. One plot idea is that chalks puts the theory of karma to practical use, with hilarious results. Another endeavor sees our quirky little mascot engage in the art of multi-tasking; whether it's reading a book and typing on a keyboard to setting himself on fire. SIMULTANEOUSLY! I'll post issues here as pdf's for the time being, but expect a nice surprise in the future.

I look forward to any devastatingly harsh critisism or masochistic violence you may direct my way. Thoughts and comments are also welcome.

Haha, I like his style. I'm looking for a comic artist for a monthly comic for Untitled, a game mag I'm working on. I didn't know you were doing comics; if you're interested, do mail me at my mail address. I can't be offering any payment, only a place to showcase your work.

You are either not in the UK, or of a younger generation. Chalky was a character made up by a comedian called Jim Davidson, when comedians were allowed to be racist. He was a black guy, and used as the butt of many, many jokes.

Some people might associate the two, and your cartoon wouldn't be as popular. Maybe you could call him "Limestone based sedimentary rock"?

All due respect, but I'd rather stick to chalkey.

Maybe. I'll see what the general response is like. If nothing else, I could always put a disclaimer in.

When I saw the title of this thread that is the first thing that popped into my mind...

At least you've already decided the comic is going to be hilarious. That's a start.

You could call it "My name is Chalkey"

I too immediately thought of the Jim Davidson routines. I am afraid I now associate the name 'Chalky' with wincing rather than laughter. Sorry.
Perhaps just call him 'Chalk' or 'Chalkster', or name the comic strip 'Chalk Bored' (intentional play on words )

Yes... Ahem. Well then, I'll take the high road and change the name. Say hello; once again, to "chalks"! In light of this, could a mod please change the title to accommodate this?

This comic needs several more injections of the "funny fluid" before it can be let out of rehab.

Maybe I've missed something, but I have absolutely no idea what the heck is going on in that image...

Which is considerably harder considering the main characters a mute...

Still, comment noted.

David, it's a refernce to the first saw film. If you haven't seen it, never mind.

It's the drawings that screw it over. We can't tell what the hell they're doing.

The first chalk thing is lying down with a gun and a small poop stain on the side. The second one has strange bubbles coming out of it's chest.

I think if you're gonna make references to specific films/games/etc it's better to make a general reference that even people who haven't seen the original can understand.

Look at Penny-Arcade for example. They do tons of references to games that I've never played, yet I still find it funny because they give you a chance to put one and one together and figure out the joke.

They're doughnuts. Or at least one would assume.

I've seen Saw and I don't really understand it, sorry.

Blood and hands. Still working out the kinks. The hands were thrown in at the last minute and the blood was nothing special, I know.

Benjamin:It's a subtle joke, so if you don't get it there's no point explaining.

At what point did decide that making the blood orange would be a better idea then sticking to red?

Also, edited my post above with more details.

I suppose. I was pretty wrapped up in the whole "saw" topic, so I guess I overlooked the general user.

I know things looks pretty grim right now, but I basically threw this picture together. The comics will be better and I will bare the brunt until I can show something of a higher quality.

You might want to change the basic design of the chalks. As it is now there's no way you'll be able to get your idea out right. As the design is now the characters won't express enough to get the reader to understand what's going on.

Designing simplified comic strip characters is more than just drawing them simpler. You also need to think about how to express movement and emotions, and make sure the characters are able to do excaggurated body language.

If chalks are supposed to be mute, give them at least a mouth. That way you'll be able to express so much more. And make the eyes different based on what emotion the chalk feels.

..and yes, I draw comics too.

Unfortunately, I have seen it :/

Here is my random crappy attempt at a piece of humour conveyed via drawings

Hehe.

You know Guyra, you're right. With my robo comics, he can talk and has eyes and flaps his arms about left, right and centre. Now that I'm going for a more visual approach to he design and humour, I'm amazed with how bad the character design is. It's only on reflection I realise this...

Well, my experience is that character design is a very important part before starting any kind of comic.

I think the idea of your comic is interesting, so I'd say redo the design from scratch, and keep up the good work!

Good advice.

I've thought about it and am now comlpetely 're-kergirggering' the concept. Characters, themes, humour, EVERYTHING! Apart from the chalk style and the name "chalks," I'm taking it apart and rebuilding it. Let's get his scrapheap challenge on!

I actually got it, and I liked it. Saws' sequels sucked bad. I'd have shot them as well.

Hope to see the revamp .

I get it! The one with blood coming out of his leg is the survivor of the first film and the others sucked badly. But Saw 3 was good and Saw 4 looks awesome!

Dr. Lawrence didn't make it as far as I know, Deathead. He bled to death after seperating his leg - he never made it out of the building. The guy he's shooting at is Adam, just before Zepp enters the room to find Adam shot in the shoulder. Adam kills Zepp, Lawrence tries to escape but dies from the loss of blood. Adam is trapped in the room by Jigsaw and Amanda kills Adam by suffocating him with a plastic bag.

Saw III was rubbish. Saw IV is amazing though (not as good as the first one, but still pretty good. I went to a bar straight after watching it and ordered every dead animal they served. The ribs were especially good...)

I hope it will be good. Saw 1 gave me chills. Saw 2 & 3 had me laughing in the cinema at some things. Never got scared, only nearly had to throw up twice. That's not horror, it's gore. Saw 1 was one of the better horror movies I've seen. Saw 2 and 3 were your average gore movies.

Saw IV's still pretty gory, but it's much better than III. I did laugh in the cinema a bit, which was weird because no one else was laughing so I felt like a bit of a t*** but oh well...

Here's a design I'm thinking of for chalks. Positives:
Big eyes easily portray emotion
Simple body works at any angle perspective and can be suited with attire easily.
Huge head/tiny body. Very comic-y

Oops. I forgot to give him hands. Never mind. Oh, and I wanted to touch up on the mouth.

Please let me know what you think.

Way better. I liked the old pointy heads, though. So, same as now, but with pointy(and possibly a little smaller) heads and hands. ^^

Keep it up, man. Now I need to go work on my own comic, lol. :p

Thanks, considering how awful they were, I'm happy to hear that. I'll probably use the pointy design for random background characters. Screen-fillers, you know?

Chalks is dead.

The idea collapsed on itself.

But don't be dissapointed, as my aforementioned Robo comic will replace it. Also, don't forget to check out my upcoming series of short comics. (available via sig beneath my posts, or the thread, which will be up soon.) These shorts will be a lot more topical, so you can always find something to look at and say: "Man, this guy can't even think of his own plot!"
