Last night I started on His Majesty's Dragon (Temeraire Book 1) by Naomi Novik. I could not stop reading after the first chapter
It's a rewriting of the Napoleonic Wars where the use of dragons makes up the armies aerial corps. We follow an English naval captain who finds himself with a dragon and his life will change completely. Peter Jackson was interested in making movies based on the books, and that should say something about the quality.
Naomi Novik's style reminds me of Robin Hobb (my favorite author), but the books are thinner and, compared to Hobb's latest works, much easier to get into. They both have a great attention to detail in a pleasurable way and they both seem interested in boats and dragons as well as staying away from the common interpretations of the fantasy genre.
I'll be away this weekend and I'm looking forward to continuing on the book, with no distractions. I got the US covers BTW, the red, green and black ones with a dragon surrounding a framed image. I think they are really beautiful and makes a nice addition to my bookshelf
