I have stumbled upon an interesting game called Nomic.
Has anyone played it before? Would anyone be interested in hosting a game here in Geek Culture?

[edit]
Here's some info on the game Nomic: A Game of Self Amendment
It's probably easier to read the "How to play" section first as the intro has lots of long words and explains how laws are made in the real world and I got half way through before thinking "what is this about?"

I would love to make something like this in php. I don't know how well this would play out in a forum.

yeah it could get messy easily.
Maybe keeping the laws in the first post would help.
I still don't understand how you get points (haven't finished reading though ), this game reminds me of Animal Farm haha.

By what I know, unless it was something like a instant messenger, it would be unplayable because of the games slowness.

@Jerico
Cool, try to make it as user-dependant as possible, because the way the computer handles things could contradict a future rule (unless you are prepared to go back in and change it) ha this game is weird

I found an open source copy of it, but I think I'll be rebuilding it from the ground up later if people enjoy it (or maybe sooner if the copy I can get on sf sucks)

I've got some specific ideas about how this can work to be awesome, and I suspect that it's not something that's built into the copy I'll be installing.

hmm, looks like the only copy of the game I can find is in german. I'm going to have to come up with something myself

It may be a while (few weeks) before I can do this game, anyone else have some ideas?

The issue at hand is moderation. How will it be moderated?

I would imagine a ban would be by vote, at least, we can make a rule that says so and change it later

I'm setting it up now, I don't know if it'll be ready tonight, I'll let you all know.

We could appoint someone Administrator, then we could change Admin if they got bored of it.
hmm is this part of the game? haha

I found this Solitaire Nomic it's a good introduction to the idea of Nomic. I did it in 4 moves!

Right now the only thing I'm waiting on is finding a good wiki to store the rules.

Do we know what kind of wiki this is? This would be perfect: http://nomic.kylem.net/wiki/index.php/Start

Anyways, I'm looking for something smaller and easier to maintain than mediawiki.

Otherwise my site's almost ready.

If I did everything correctly, the forum should be on the above site. But, I probably didn't do anything correctlry and you'll get a 404.

edit:

i didn't make a link correctly, just go to:
http://nomic.umediascience.com

p.s.
don't overload it, it's hosted on my home computer.

Looks like it was kwiki, I'll run and install it during lunch and get the site rockin.

You can see it's current state here:
http://nomic.dragonground.net

Click on "Forum" from the left nav.

It should be playable in a few hours

I'll be installing a community plugin probably later in the week which should be really fun

Dr Schnitzengruber, I checked out your link but I get a 404

guess you aren't online all the time then

@Jer
The site looks good
can new proposals be moved to the voting thread when needed?

We can move them, I was thinking we'll move them, lock them, and set up a poll.

I had to restart my computer. I do this just about every day to refresh some resources. Besides that, you are just unlucky to come at that time.

edit: in fact, I see you in my log file. You were able to connect to the server, get redirect to the right page and be cut-off right then.

my ideas: In a single forum we have a thread for each game. The users are divided into judges(like moderators, watch over game and make sure rules aren't broken and people vote) and players(people who participate in game and vote).

@Dr
That sounds good
except for the judge part as it contradicts part of the initial rules

Quote: "212. If players disagree about the legality of a move or the interpretation or application of a rule, then the player preceding the one moving is to be the Judge and decide the question. Disagreement for the purposes of this rule may be created by the insistence of any player. This process is called invoking Judgment."

I feel like a lawyer now

I know realise why the guy says to be careful if you are programming Nomic, because tiny things can effect the game.

then let's change them and allow judges. The server is back online by the way.

I think we should just try to play a game on a forum and see how long it takes before the world is destroyed.

Well we don't really need people defined as judges because you can object to an action that breaks rules etc (invoke judgement)
The problem with having fixed judges is that each player has a turn so a judge might be presiding over their own case!
We could of course change the law later if it seems suitable but I think we should start with the initial laws as unchanged as possible.

Did either of you have a go at the Solitaire Nomic? I'm not sure if how I won was legal

Mine is ready, though the site itself is in it's infant state.

I hate to launch it while yours is getting going, but I had her half done when you announced yours Anyways, should be twice the fun!

Expect more changes, this site is only just playable now, it's not pretty yet

@Jerico2day- it seems you have a completely diffrent idea then me of how this game will work. I don't know which one would work better so we might want to try them out first( before we lead people to the wrong forum).

I'm all for it. If it turns out your rules are better and my game doesn't go anywhere, I'd be happy to reset the game and incorporate your rules on my more permanent dedicated server, of course only if you want, but it won't be subject to reboots and all that jazz.

Of course, I'd totally hook ya up with some modding powers and hosting if you wanted

I can't really tell how your game is atm tho, cuz I can't access it from where I am currently

I know

Still workin on it. But I gotta call it quits tonite, I'm exhausted

I'll turn the forum gray for now so it's not so overwhelming.

I couldn't get the wiki working today, unfortunately that means no wiki until probably next week as I'll be away, with only limited time I'll be able to check on the server.

If you guys want to give it a go, you'll have to make do without polls, just do yay or nay posts And make a new post in the rules section when the rules change.

Next week I'll devote my time to finish up the site with all the fancy features

@Jer
Are website proposals part of the game?
I think I need to look at some more games of Nomic to see how they have run it

The first proposal must be to agree on the initial rules.

Website proposals are there for improvement on the website, it's not necessarily part of the game, unless of course you make it so (or get rid of it)
