So I'm running Vista on a several month old computer, and it's been acting up recently. Occasionally powering up and logging out will take a really long time.

Today it got stuck on the log out screen for over half an hour, so I power cycled it, and then it got stuck on a black screen on power up, which I let it sit at for another half an hour before power cycling again. Then I selected the repair option and it did a system restore.

My computer booted up fine afterwards, but now tons of things are screwed up. Texture maker gets killed by DEP (Data Execution Protection) on start up. The TurboCAD Tip window gets killed by DEP on launch, and then DEP kills it when I try to exit. Several of my files disappeared, most of them programming source files. Luckily those were backed up so I didn't lose too much. Paint Shop Pro tries to go into some install thing on launch which then crashes. Who knows what else doesn't work...so yeah...

Hopefully the hanging is gone, but I doubt it.

Does anybody have ideas/suggestions on what is/was going on and how to fix it?

Thanks

Jeff

[EDIT] 3D Canvas does install attempt/crash on launch and did this weird loopy thing where it kept installing and crashing... 3D World Studio crashes on launch...
[EDIT2]Rappelz is dead, Sword of the New World is dead, Empire Earth II is dead, Age of Empires III is dead, Yahoo Messenger is dead (not that I care about that) ...

Ye, your installation got fudged up some how. I'd do an error check on your harddrive. You can do so by going to My computer > tools tab > error check.

Then after you do that, if everything checks out, burn and run memtest86 to make sure you don't have a bad processor or ram.

Once that's done, if all checks out, do a fresh install, you prolly got some kind of virus.

You're probably not going to get away without reinstalling, vista will never be the same until you reinstall

If it happens again, you'll have to dig deaper, could still be a faulty drive or just about anything.

You can also got the command prompt and type chkdsk /f accept the restart thingy and it will make sure everything is in order there. If vista has that command that is.

Rappelz is dead? Oh my. Go look at KYP's avatar and adhere.

Seriously now, chkdsk /f, memtest86 and personally, I'd almost say something screwed something in the registry. Nevertheless, bad installation seems to be the cause, or a very bad virus - one of which I haven't heard the symptoms of yet.

Post your computer specs, specifically, cpu, ram amount and speed, motherboard company name, video card. Perhaps there will be something obvious just from that.

Those checks worked, so I moved all my files onto a flash drive and did reinstall of Vista and everything seems to be running fine. Now I just have to reinstall everything...

Anyway, graphics card is Nvidia GeForce 7350 LE

Registry problem seems like a likely cause. I've had Avast doing virus scans and it hasn't ever seen anything on this computer.

@tha_rami
What does/did KYP have in his sig? I couldn't see it...

Thanks for the help guys

Only virus scans? Viruses are actually fairly rare now-a-days. It is much more likely for you to get spyware or adware. I also highly recommend McAfee site advisor. siteadvisor.com

I forgot to mention that I do have Windows Defender for malware/spyware protection. I'll take a look at the site advisor though.
