@ gamebird, yeah. I dont plan to do vista or dx10 any time soon, and looking at them prices for the 8800 series cards, and seeing how my mobo is PCI-E 1.0 I dont think I can or should go for an 8 series card. Unless theres pci-e 1.o in the lower 8 series, that would work. Did I mention theres too many damn cards out there!!

This cards pretty good, 512mb ram, fast core clock, fast memory clock it's good for what your looking for, and will probably run mostly everything near-high settings.

My cousin bought this and works like a charm. Runs brand new MOH: Airborne with full detail and resolution and it's still asking for more!

Now a side note; your cpu isn't all that great, so coupled with a great video card...eh, I'm getting worried. What socket is your P4? I seriously recommend you get a C2D in the near future.

this is an Intel p4 3.2ghz socket LGA775 800 FSB, so I dont think its that bad. yeah a core 2 duo would be nice but I wasnt planning on building a new machine for a while. probably not for a year or more.

I think I'm liking the XFX Nvidia 8800GTS 320MB 320bit GDDR3 PCI-E 16x card from newegg ($299.00)(DX10 Ready) Seems to have the best combo of what I want vs what I can use, etc.

any opinions?

Thats the card I have CR. I like it alot. I haven't used any other cards of similar quality though so I can't tell you if it's the best or not, but the upgrade will be noticeable.

I'm pretty sure you'd be just fine with getting a newer card with PCI-E 1.0. I'm fairly certain the PCI-E on my motherboard is outdated, by my 8800 still runs blazingly fast.

If you can get the 8800 GTS 320, go for it. Sure, it's only half the RAM of the 640, but just as fast, and great for the current DX10 titles, so long as you don't try to go past 1280x1024 for a few.

done deal!

Ordered the XFX Nvidia 8800GTS 320MB 320bit 16x PCI-E card from newegg ($299). Since it has a $30 rebate ($269) I tacked on Fedex overnight shipping ($27) and the rush my order option for $4. I missed the ship cutoff for today by 8 minutes, so maybe they'll squeak me in and ship today , and I'll have it tomr, but most likely it will ship tomr for arrival Thursday. Either way as long as its here before Saturday

I made sure to check that I had the overall power spec, extra pcie wire to card from psu, and the actual space in my board/case to handle this sucker. Apparently everything checked out above spec

well, no, not doing vista/dx10 for a while yet, so in the meantime I wanted a card that was hi-end but not top of the line both for money reasons, and the fact I dont currently need 8800 Ultra which is insane and more geared to vista/dx10/pci-e 2.0

Having compared all of the 8 series cards, and based on my spec (not looking to rebuild a whole new machine) I thought this one was best fit for me. Theres a 640MB version but its overkill to me. My previous card was fine for what I play/do, so by that logic this card is a major leap ahead. If at some point I build a new machine c2d/dx10/vista/pci-e 2+ etc, this card can bring me forward and get it running, where then I can buy a card at that time, which might be far off from now. then this card could go back in this machine as a secondary machine, and I can retire my old win2k p3-800 fx5200 which is my current spare machine.

I read reviews and compared specs for the past two days, plus took into consideration hw specs like power consumption etc etc etc. Aside from nvidia's site, newegg's reviews, I used this chart to help break down what the deal was between the cards in the 8 series (scroll to bottom) youll notice some 8's are pcie2, some are not. Even tho both kinds would work in my 1.0 it panned out that the right combo of everything including price, i picked the 8800 gts

Why do people think there is no reason to get a DX10 compatible card if they are not getting Vista... It's not like the card doesn't work with DX9 or XP. It's all in pretty much the same price range so there is really no reason why you shouldn't just spend the little extra for the newest line of card.

I never said that, I know DX10 cards still do DX9, just I was asking because it sounded like the reason he wasn't getting vista was because he couldn't get a DX10 card and that there was really no other point.

its a dx 10 card btw. at first I wasnt sure if the dx10 cards worked with 9 and xp, then I researched. having a good card fry on you out of no where sorta throws you into scramble mode - and I hadn't been keeping up on specs of new cards and such. sorted.

thanks Dink, and everyone

so far this pc, with the temporary vid card hasnt showed any signs of any weird behavior, no crahes, or any cpu heat problems, it idles at 40c now (shooting for 36c by the end of the silver gel burn in period). Just double checking some psu specs vs the new card. its an odd formula of the 12v rails amperage vs gpu power draw. I just replaced this psu so it would stink if I needed to replace it for the new vid card.

How big is your current PSU?

They say the power consumption on the newer cards is less than the last gen cards, though I upgraded my PSU anyhow in hopes that later on I'd still be in good shape. I have a 700watt right now

From what I remember, the only difference between them is the power provided. Perhaps there will be problems caused by the video card not getting enough power through the pcie slot. My best advice is to look this up on google, scan some forums, ect.

Dink, its a Antec 500W. From what I have been reading the 8800gts needs 26amps and around 175w continuous (but according to the overclockers etc the stock card will never need more than 12.5 amps in the stock setting). The amp output is apparently calculated by adding together the +12v rail amp outputs on the psu. I have two +12v rails with 19a and 17a respective, so thats well above spec according to everything ive read. Aside from the cpu (84w), I have a dvd rom drive and 2 WD SATA hdd's. I think I should be ok. If not, I hear there are cdrom-bay supplemental psu's that you can install to power the 6 pin power input on the pci-e card, removing that load from your main psu. And yes the newer cards draw less than the others since they shrunk the nm value in the egineering. Just like they did for cpu's that are faster and use less juice, but thats by comparison. In general these things are sucking juice like no tomorrow

I wonder what the 6800 was drawing, that'd be good to check...

just found out that somehow my order shipped from California yesterday after I ordered it (even tho I missed the cutoff by 8 minutes). According to fedex tracking the package arrived in NJ last night, and was shipped to NY local sort by this morning. Apparently it is on a delivery truck for delivery by 3pm today!

we usually get my wife's fedex packages from her work by 10-11 am weekdays, so this thing could be here in a couple hours. Newegg rocks, lets hope fedex doesnt screw it up

YAY!

All is good. No problems with heat or power.
Passed all Stability tests in nvidia control panel

briefly played HL2DM, TF2, and Portal - no crashes, looks great, but it always did

the best part is my cpu fans no longer ramp their rpm's like they did before since the cpu is running so much cooler now. That incessant whine is gone, and it no longer sounds like my case is going to "take off", like my wife says

so far so good. ill give it a better thrashing later or tomorrow but I think its safe to say the old card definitely took a crap.

@agent dink- the way I see it there is no point in getting a direct x 10 card when I'm not going to get vista because a. if I'm using XP there are cards that have the same power as 8xxx cards but are much cheaper with direct x 9 and b. I don't need the extra firepower the new cards have when I run direct x 9. (most of the time) If I was never going to get Vista then it would make sense to get a cheaper but equally capable direct x 9 card.

I would never buy a new OS to replace the one I already have on my computer, there's just no point. But if I were to build a new computer and needed to buy one, it would be vista, or I would get it had it came with a pre-built computer.

I'm going to assume that the main answer for this would be because of DX10. Have you heard stories of how people were able to use tweaks and hacks to play DX10 games in XP with DX9 hardware? Nice card! What temps are you getting on load and idle?

edit: Don't forget that you can apply your AS5 on the GPU cooler, because you can be pretty sure that those things leave the factory with generic thermal goo.

I think it idles in low 60's c. I havent logged it at load yet, but I will later on today. Ill post here afterwards. After adding that card to my system my overall temps on MB and CPU are a shade higher, but I guess thats expected (cpu went from 41c idle to 43c) I am in the middle of some tests with case fan placement. I had 2 80mm fans at the back of the case (both as exhaust), so i moved one (the upper one) to the front-bottom of the case as an intake. Seems to not have done anything, aside from cpu idling at 44c now . I am going to move the one thats still in the back, to the upper position and see if that does anything, if not, I am going to put them both back the way they were.

At this point I dont plan to take my nice new card apart to apply as5 to it.

seems for this particular case/hw setup + 2 80mm case fans, the setup that achieves the lowest cpu/mb temps is to have both fans in the rear of the case as exhaust, so I put it back to that configuration. that's not to say if I added a third fan (bottom front intake) that I wouldnt see an improvement. maybe Ill try that one day but for now I am sticking with the original current setup.

as far as gpu temps I will test those in a bit

idle: 65c
10 mins HL2DM: 74c max / 70c avg

You probably want a negative air pressure in your case. Ie, the fans at the back, so that air is forced in through the front.

If you have any vents on the sides of your case, block them off (unless you have one of them tube deals that sucks air directly onto the CPU fan).

Make sure the intake at the front is at the bottom (cool air is lower, and as it heats up, it'll rise and be sucked out).

Try to reduce turbulence by rounding your IDE cables. (Make sure you have backups in case you accidentally slice a cord - I borked one, but got 3 fine after that).

If you can, situate your rear fan directly below the PSU. The PSU will suck through the air it needs, and mean-while, the exhaust fan you put in will suck air straight from the CPU/fan, and help to create the negative air pressure in the case.

JessT, thanks but its been sorted. I was a noob with the Thermal Grease issue, not the rest of this stuff I already have rounded cables from my Antec psu, and I use SATA drives so theres no ribbon cabbles in my case except for the floppy drive but thats run flat up against side panel (the non-access side). And yes the p4 3.2 socket lga775 processor and this case has the tube-deal thing. with an intake vent on the side access panel. I keep the telescopic tube fully retracted however.

temps are good now with both 80's as exhaust in the upper rear (original setup) - idle cpu at 42c (was 41c before 8800GTS video )

hopefully it shaves off a few more degrees while the AS5 finishes its phases over the next few days or so.
