Yep... ADSL just got faster again!

Aussie maths whiz supercharges net

Quote: "Most ADSL services around the world are effectively limited to speeds between 1 to 20Mbps, but if Dr Papandriopoulos's technology is successfully commercialised that speed ceiling would be closer to 100Mbps."

Quote: "He said others had researched the same area but his project was attracting significant interest because it was more practical and easier to implement."

Quote: "Dr Papandriopoulos expects the technology to be implemented by internet providers around the world within two or three years."

With a last name like "Papandriopoulos," you'd better do something awesome with your life!

Awesome though, I hope it gets put in use!

That's not as bad as you think you said.

I'm not sure what type of internet I have here at uni, but it downloads (from big sites like MS) at over 4MB a second. As in, four mega bytes a second. A forty megabyte file takes 10 seconds.

Yeah, our Uni connection is satellite, and in off-peak times we get about 1.4MB/s (ie, 11.2Mb/s).

At home, we have dated ADSL, as my parents are stubborn and wont upgrade to ADSL2+ even though the plan is the same cost, we just need a new modem and splitter.

Oh well.

Let me get this right.

He was hired to optimise the way the networks operate, Then when he figured out how to do it he refused to give them the work, patented it, and will probley try to sell it back to companies like themselfs???

Although 100mbps BB does sound nice, from my experiance the more data you force down copper lines, the more conjection it causes, to which SP's respond by slowing down the whole thing.

If you want upto 100mbps BB then ask for a FiberOptic Line, It will cost quite a bit in installation costs, but is much better

Sure, if you have the infrastructure in place in your area.

There's not too many places now without copper wires, and hence, broadband.
But, Optic Fiber is still a way off in terms of being used everywhere.

By no means do I live out of the way, but none of the area where I am has Optic Fiber, only copper wire.

Probably mean 6Mb/1Mb

And what kind of college gives students a 4MB connection? I'm lucky to get 20KB down at mine.

Lol our school has an amazing connection, it can support 500 people playing WoW at the same time and I can still download a Gig files in a half hour! Thats wireless as well. Wired is always slower for me. Anyways, i like our cable connection at home, since the cable company had a large fiber optic cable going through the city and it just branched off into cable internet for everyone in town.

fiber-optic would cost a hell of a lot, because the exchanges here run copper everywere, so i would have to pay for a fiber connection to sydney :S

Any decent one

We pay through the nose for ours, though...

The Uni's (and other education institutes) get massive discounts on internet use - just above cost price or some-such, I believe. It's a shame they don't pass those savings on to us, but... Oh well.

Never sure, What upload speed I buy and what I get is always different.
Something seems to bog my upload speed down at certain times of the day.

With ADSL uploading is always slower unfortunatly, the main way around that if you want a high upload speed is through SDSL which allows the same upload speed as you get download speed, Unfortunatly not all SP's offer SDSL, and those that do charge more for SDSL, Hense why it mainmy usedby companies or individuals that want to Stream Media, Ect
