Geek Culture / sound coming from speakers

I just noticed today that when I have headphones plugged into my computer speakers, sound still comes out of the speakers. In fact, even when the sound is completely turned down, sound will still come out of the speakers. When I say sound, I mean whatever is playing comes out of both the speakers (though fainter) and the headphones. So why is this happening?

The speakers are a bit old, they're Yamaha's, and the headphones are Radioshack headphones. Any ideas?

Sounds like they're not plugged in all the way. Just my 2 cents.
