Well theres really two options for you, you can either use decals and fill an area with them wich would create a nice 3d effect. or you can create hud images wich would not look quiet as nice but it would give you better fps. i might be able to help you out with the decal option but ill have to try out some scripts to get it to the hud images to work right. If you have any more questions let me know.

Yeah that sounds about right

I think you can scale decals so you could make one of a sand swirl and then scale it up to a realistic size although I'm not sure how well the quality of the image would stand up depending on how big you go.

There was an application on the forums called Decal Maker which had a free earlier version and a fully featured version coming out so you might want to search for that.

It would be cool to see!

thanks for the input, guys.

B Squared, would it be possible for you to flood the map with a "fine sand" storm, like in games like jak 3?

or possibly making a decal so large it fills one plane of the fpsc grid? that way, we can line them up so finely that the player would have a hard time noticing that they are only decals...

(i'm making a game that requires heavy combat during a sandstorm.

unfortunatly i havnt played jak 3 but i can make the textures tileable for you. what ill probly do is make a tileable decal for you to put slightly above the ground and then ill make a vertical decal that you can spread across your map at random places, it may take me a couple days because im pretty busy this week but ill see what i can do. oh could you post a screenshot of the desert your using so i can try to make the texture match you desert. if not thats fine

In addition to decals and HUD overlays, you can also use colored fog. Here's a pic of something I was messing with a while back...

The next step would have been to use something like the rain/snow decals from FPSFree and modify to feel like sand particles. FredP had a demo game way back when using snow (ash?) in this way and I think it would work well combined with the other effects allready suggested.

And dowload, ill try to make some faded version so you can have smoother borders. Theres one low on the ground and one thats just dust in the air.
