i read a previous post about how impossible it is to make an mmorpg but before i bought this program the one thing i asked was is it possible to the staff of this program and they said yes but it is difficult, but it is possible for 1 person to make the thing right. very hard and years away but possible? im not going to start with one, i dont even know anything about this yet. but maybe in the future i might work on one.

is it possible? and how long before an non programmer can do this estimated?

Yes, but don't even think about trying until you have a complete grasp on every aspect of the language. Depends on how fast you learn and how devoted you are and how big the MMORPG you want to make is. My guess is that if you are a very fast learner and very devoted, and it's not a very big MMORPG (think 1% of WoW), 4-5 years.

DBPro can only support up to 255 online players per net game and you can only have one net game per application. Not very massive IMO.

The max players per game is a no issue, thanks to multisync and other multiplayer DLL's, the limit basically doesnt exist

But yes, making a mmorpg is for a non programmer, who is extremely devoted, and learning very fast, at least 5 years.

Making one with DB isn't impossible, but we get dozens of new users appearing on the forums who have never programmed before and have just bought DB expecting to be able to 'knock one out' in a couple of weeks.

It is this that is impossible!

Explaining this every time just gets tiresome and we all just end up saying "it's impossible - forget it".

As has already been said, it is possible, but an absolutely mammoth task both technically and from a programming perspective.

Assuming you speak no other language other than English, ask yourself how long it would take you to write a book like War And Peace in Chinese.

I would say that the time period for you to get a finished MMORPG up and running would be about the same...

It's not that making an MMORPG is especially difficult in DBPro or anything, in fact it's probably less dificult then other languages, but it's that making an MMORPG in any language is an enormous task, especially by yourself.

You got the correct answer from the staff as far as DBPros capabilities, yes DBPro can make one. But can you?
That's why people are telling you it's "impossible", do a search on this forum for MMORPG's and you'll get an endless list of people before you who have attempted it.
Just like any other language it depends mostly on the skill of the programmer.

Look up XenoCythe, he's currently making one, he was making some good progress on it last I checked. As well look for Riidi's open source MMORPG project, so you can see all the work that has to be done, it will give you a better sense of what you're in for.

It is difficult, I'd suggest buidling an rpg first and then worrying about the networking, after all, if you already have a stellar system in place, what would be so bad about only 300 some players right? But..I find mmo's boring so I'll never make one, not that i could .

look at it this way:

im in my sixth year of development with my "MMO" (in quotes because i don't know how many people are going to play it, so i can't claim its massive yet). the first year was just learning programming concepts and designing. once i had that down, i got DBP and started to actually learn to code. this took about 2-3 years for me to fully learn the language. after that, i've had most of my progress. the experience really helps you go faster and use time more efficiently. but, even then, im still not finished.

Hi,

I would like to say, its very much possible to do in Darkbasic, the question is if you have the devotion and time to do it..

I started mine in Darkbasic around 04 and there have been various hickups during the development of it due to boredom, video games, lazyness, etc etc but overall I would say that working on it has been great for me and I would like to show some screenshots of my work, though its nothing that would scream out to you MMORPG it was a good work in progress..
