Your particle tut is amazing, I simply love it, its what I need for the game I'm making.

*which is coming out in a month, plug..plug*

Anyways..there is a more serious matter to this topic than the passing eye would grant. Because I know you have a fair amount of experience on all of us in a variety of languages I was wondering when did it all 'click'. I keep studying C++ and I'll be looking at flash as well and of course DB. While I am learning and doing well, my question is when could I hope to just be able to recall huge chunks of code and type it all in? I know this can be a bit vauge but programming takes time and I was just wondering on your own personal experience when did it all 'click' and become hey I can do that no problem at all.

@Zombie
While I'm nowhere near as experienced as TDK, for me it is about learning new tricks. When you experiment with programs you find out how to do certain things, then when something similar comes along you have a trick that you can use. Practice is the main thing
New things keep appearing (especially when new software is developed) and so no one can ever say they know how to do anything.
I'm sure that even TDK comes across things that have him reaching for his pencil and paper every now and again

That is very true, I have a great time every chance I get to code, I've learned a lot since first coming here to apollo and I've made a lot of friends as well . I feel like I'm travelling some ancient road of heroes following in their steps to programming greatness.

This thread reminds me so much of an old one back from 2005:

OK so this one is more asking how he became so great, rather than the previous one which was just commenting on how great he was.

But referring to the original question, he probably became such a programming veteran by constantly reading the help pages. Back 2002, there weren't many users signed up here (certainly nowhere near as many as there are today), so there was still a lot of figuring out solutions for yourself.
The DB Classic documentation was actually quite useful, that, with a bit of trial and improvement would solve almost anything, so long as the language allowed what you were trying to achieve.

Doh!

Not another one...

At least now I can lock this one myself without having to ask Rich!

To answer the question for the very last time, the reason I use the name TDK_Man isn't anything remarkable. I have no connection with TDK the company, but it is indirectly related.

Back in the old days when I got my first 300 baud modem and started using BBS's I had to think of a username. At the time I used to use 5.25" floppy disks and purely by chance, there were some of these disks on my desk - made by TDK.

So, as I couldn't think of anything better, TDK_Man was what I chose. Had things happened differently you could at this moment all quite easily have been talking to Verbatim_Man!

As for when it all 'clicked', I don't think it ever really did. Whatever language I use these days I refer quite often to the docs and help files for command syntax. I can remember the methodology - eg how to do something, but I can't for the life of me remember the parameters for commands like Set Object or Set Camera To Follow.

But that's more of an 'age' thing to be honest.

I may be an experienced programmer - in so much as I've been doing it over thirty years now, but I'm certainly not a great programmer. There are many far better programmers than me on here.

But, if there's one thing I did when learning that helped me, it's heeding advice from people who knew better than me. When someone looked at my code and said that there was a better way to do it, there was no argument from me - I just changed the way I worked and learnt the 'better' way.
